Claude Burrill Obituary

BURRILL--Claude W., passed away October 20, at home in Coralville, IA. Claude was born February 19, 1925 in Akron, IA. He earned his BA, MS, and Ph.D. in Math at the Univ of Iowa, and a Fulbright to Manchester University UK, where he met his first wife Kathleen, with whom he raised two daughters before divorcing. Claude settled in the NYC area (Bronx then Tenafly, NJ). He taught at NYU/Bell Labs, and IBM's Systems Research Institute, with visiting appointments at Columbia, Dartmouth, and National University of Singapore. He lectured/consulted globally and authored eight books on management, computer modelling, decision support, project management and quality, pure mathematics, probability and statistics. Claude served on the Board of Trustees and as Acting President at William Paterson College. In 1991, Claude and his wife Tina moved to Iowa City, where he co-authored two books on total quality management and statistical process control, and taught at the University of Iowa. Claude was a gifted mathematician, with expertise in real analysis, measures, integration and probability, which he skillfully applied to project management and process improvement. Although suffering from a neuro-degenerative disorder in his final years, Claude continued to enjoy travel and hiking, and company of family and friends. He is survived by his wife Tina, children Anne, Jane and Thomas, sons-inlaw, and four grandchildren. Claude's remains were buried in Akron Riverside cemetery, Iowa.
