SMITH--David Williamson,

of Scarsdale, NY died peacefully surrounded by family on December 1 following a battle with cancer. He was 71. David will be remembered as a caring, funny, thoughtful man who touched many lives in his career, through community service and most of all through his love and dedication to his family. He was a pioneer and preeminent voice in corporate governance, serving for nearly 20 years as CEO of the Society of Corporate Secretaries & Governance Professionals and had a distinguished career as an executive and lawyer. He was a public school teacher in the Bronx in the 1960's and thereafter worked to support at risk children and promote education. David was virtually inseparable from his beloved wife of 36 years, Cheryl. Together, they devoted their time to St. James the Less Church in Scarsdale and its service to the community and New York's homeless. A graduate of Scarsdale High School, David attended Amherst College and earned his law degree from NYU. David is survived by his wife Cheryl, his children Dylan, Stephanie Treanor, Erich Stegich, Todd and Jenner, as well as grandchildren Max, Leo, Josh, Olivia, Lila, Sophie and Marin. Funeral services will be held on December 8 at 12:30pm at St. James the Less Church in Scarsdale. In lieu of flowers, the family is founding a scholarship in David's name for a child of a Scarsdale school employee. To donate see: gofundme.com/david-w-smith-scholarship-fund. A similar scholarship enabled David to attend Amherst in the 1960s.
