SAGAN--Eli J. Sagan, husband of Frimi for 65 years, father of Miriam (Richard; Robert, deceased), Rachel (Steve), Susannah (Andy), and Daniel (Alisa), grandfather of Isabel, Max, Ezra, Sophie, Tobias, Leah, and Sonia, brother of Bruce and Eugene (deceased), passed away peacefully on January 4 in Dedham, MA at the age of 87. Reared in Summit, NJ, he attended Harvard University, graduating in 1949. He raised his family in Englewood, NJ, moving to Dedham in 2011. A lifetime lover of ideas, possessed of a lively intellect and generosity of spirit, Eli made his mark on many people in various capacities. After retiring as President of the New York Girl Coat Company, he went on to author six books in the area of cultural sociology, including At the Dawn of Tyranny and The Honey and the Hemlock. He taught in the Departments of Sociology at the University of California at Berkeley and Brandeis University. He spent his life active in philanthropy and politics, invigorating the Sagan Foundation and serving as Finance Chair for the George McGovern for President Committee in 1972. He served as Treasurer of the Council for A Livable World, and was proud to be listed twice on Nixon's Enemies List. He was a charter member of the Board of the Brandeis University Women's Study program. Donations may be made to the Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Program at Brandeis University.
