HARRY HICKS Obituary

HICKS--Harry L., Jr. Harry L. Hicks, Jr. died March 10, 2013, at Williamsburg Landing in Williamsburg, VA. Harry was born June 30, 1920 in Little Neck, NY, to Louise Van Nostrand and H. Leslie Hicks. He was a direct descendant of Robert Hicks who arrived at the Plymouth Colony in 1623. Harry grew up in Little Neck and Manhasset, N.Y. He graduated from Colby College in Waterville, ME, in June 1942 and was drafted into the military the week after graduation. In 1946, he began work at Hicks & Greist, Inc., an advertising agency co-founded by his father. Harry was president there from 1956 until 1974, when he retired to live on Shelter Island, NY. Harry and his wife of 51 years, Mary Louise (Yoder) Hicks, were married in 1961 and had three children--Lisa, Thomas, and Jonathan. Along with Harry's daughter Andrea, they enjoyed life on the water and spent many happy times with the close-knit Hicks family. Harry was an active community member, golfer, and traveler, with trips including a cross-country motor home trip, a tour of the inland waterway, and a trip to Antarctica. In 1987, Harry and Mary Louise moved to Williamsburg, VA, where they joined the Kingsmill Golf Club and the Williamsburg Presbyterian Church. In 1998, they moved to Williamsburg Landing. Harry is survived by his wife, Mary Louise, and his four children and their spouses: Andrea and Thomas Sato of Wilton, CT; Lisa Hicks and Elliot Swan of Wellesley, MA; Thomas and Susan Hicks of Port Washington, NY; and Jonathan and Julie Hicks of Chicago. He is also survived by eight grandchildren. A Memorial Service celebrating Harry's life will be held at the Williamsburg Landing auditorium at 2:30pm on Friday, March 15. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Memorial Fund at the Williamsburg Landing.
