Herb was a fine historian and teacher to many, always fierce in his demand for the truth and gentle in his caring for his students. He was ever ready with a good story that enlivened past and present, and a lunchtime conversation with Herb was sure to delight with wit and wisdom. He loved this region and helped us understand it with his writing and his service. We will miss him, but won't forget him. Thanks, Herb, for all you taught us about history, life, and living.-- Randall Miller
