JAMES DUFFY Obituary

DUFFY--James H., born on February 3, 1934 to the late William C. and Phyllis Rofinot Duffy, passed away peacefully in his home on January 29, 2019 after a long illness. Following graduation from Princeton and Harvard Law School, he spent his legal career at Cravath Swaine and Moore and retired from there as a partner. He and his late wife Martha spent many Septembers in Venice where he wrote one of his Reuben Frost series of mystery novels under the pseudonym Haughton Murphy. Throughout his life, he enthusiastically supported numerous arts organizations and civic projects. His brother, John predeceased him. He is survived by his longtime companion, Sophia Schachter, his brother, Joseph (Ann), and the many nieces and nephews in whom he took great pride and pleasure, Margaret, Elizabeth, Caitlin, Patrick, Kate, Lillian, Caroline and Tim and grandnieces and nephews. Funeral Mass will be held at Saint Ignatius Loyola, Park Avenue and 84th Street, Saturday, February 2 at 3:00pm. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the School of American Ballet, 70 Lincoln Center Plaza, New York City 10023, or to the Baryshnikov Arts Center, 450 W. 37th St., Suite 501, New York City 10018.

Thank you for your wonderful enthusiasm which you shared so generously. I knew you so briefly, but a favorite memory...being with you and Martha at the Biennale de Venise long ago, breakfast at the hotel Cipriani, meals with lots of wine and laughter, talking of art...No doubt you were a blessing to so many others besides me.
