James Hurlburt Evans of East Hampton and New York City, passed away peacefully at home on May 11, 2015. He was born in Lansing, Michigan on June 26, 1920 to parents Mary Hurlburt Evans and James Lafayette Evans. He graduated from Centre College and The University of Chicago Law School. Mr. Evans was predeceased by his beloved wife, Mary Johnston Evans, his son, Eric Evans, grandson, Douglas Madsen, former wife, LoRaine Bertram Evans, and sisters, Blanche Goetzman and Kathryn Evans. Mr. Evans, is survived by his loving daughters, Carol Evans Jepperson (Tom) and Joan Evans Madsen (Richard), step-children, Marcy Head Benson (Bruce), Paul Johnston Head (Jean), and Eric Talbott Head (Shelley Magness), four grandchildren and six great- grandchildren. He leaves behind his dedicated assistant, Kathleen Noonan Roskell, who served at his side for nearly 50 years. James Evans' illustrious career culminated in his retirement as Chairman of the Board of Union Pacific Corporation in 1985. He began his association with Union Pacific in 1965 when he became a member of the Board of Directors of Union Pacific Railroad Company. Upon the formation of Union Pacific Corporation in 1969, Mr. Evans joined its management as President and a Director. He served as President of Union Pacific Corporation from 1969 until 1977, at which time he became Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. Mr. Evans came to Union Pacific from The Seamen's Bank for Savings where he had served as President and then Chairman and President. Prior to joining The Seamen's Bank, he was Financial Vice-President and Director of Dun & Bradstreet, Inc., following the merger with Reuben H. Donnelley Corporation at which he had served first as Secretary- Treasurer and General Counsel and then was elected as a Vice President. His first position following his service as a Navy Lieutenant in World War II was with Harris Trust & Savings Bank in Chicago as an attorney and loan officer. James Evans was a former Director of American Telephone and Telegraph Company, The Anaconda Company, Bristol-Myers Company, Citicorp/Citibank, Dun & Bradstreet, Inc., General Motors Corporation and Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. He was a former Co- Chairman of The Business Roundtable and a former Member of The Business Council. Mr. Evans was a Life Trustee of the Central Park Conservancy (former Chairman). He also served on the governing boards of New York-Presbyterian Hospital, The University of Chicago, Centre College (former Chairman of the Board), and The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts (former Co-Chairman). He served as a member of the Board of Governors of the American National Red Cross (former National Fund Chairman) and the President's Committee on Environmental Quality. He was a Trustee of the Rockefeller Brothers Fund and the founding Chairman and Life Trustee of the National Recreation and Park Association. Mr. Evans was a member of the Racquet & Tennis Club and Knickerbocker Club, both of New York City; the Maidstone Club of East Hampton, New York; Alfalfa Club and the Metropolitan Club of Washington, D.C. Jim Evans was a brilliant, cultured, charismatic man with a charming personality and generous spirit. He will be sorely missed by his family, friends and those who had the privilege to work with or for him. Memorial service will be held at 2:00pm, Wednesday, May 20 at The Brick Presbyterian Church, 91st St. and Park Ave., NYC.
