FOWLE--John, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 28, 2015. Beloved husband, loving father of Amelia, Anastasia and Marilyn and grandfather of nine, John was known for his kindness and openness. During successful careers in law and investment banking, John became a dedicated student and practitioner of Buddhist meditation, serving on the Boards of Insight Meditation Society and New York Insight Meditation Center. His wise and compassionate support of the Centers and their practitioners proved essential to their flourishing. Born in Lincoln, in the North of England on November 19, 1942, John grew up knowing the loss and pain of war; his father died a month before his birth. A brilliant man, he helped his mother while working and studying the law, earning his qualification with a Distinction. He built a successful career in England, the Bahamas, and finally New York, where he met his beloved wife, the Dharma teacher Gina Sharpe, ultimately retiring to study and practice Buddhist meditation full time. Many will miss his special generous presence. Shortly before his death he said, "There is generosity in each of us, longing to come out. When it takes the opportunity, it pours out." Funeral services will take place Saturday, August 1, 2015, in Westchester, New York, 9am, Clark Funeral Home, 4 Woods Bridge Road, Katonah, NY.

Dear Gina-- My deepest condolences on the passing of your beloved husband John. He offered so much to the Dharma, and together you nurtured the deepest reservoirs of refuge in our western Theravada tradition. May he rest in peace, and may he meet his teacher soon after rebirth. May you be happy reflecting on his goodness, and your own. Deep gratitude.
