JONATHAN LEVY Obituary

LEVY--Jonathan F., 77, of Patterson, NY, at his home on Tuesday, January 22, after a long battle with congestive heart failure. Son of the late Milton Levy and Sylvia (Narins) Levy, and brother of the late Richard Matthew Levy; husband of the late Geraldine Carro; father of Catherine Levy Barnard, father-in-law of Walker Barnard, and grandfather of Kiran Jon Barnard, all of Berlin; and partner of Anne Singer. A graduate of the Ethical Culture Fieldston School (1952), he received an A.B. cum laude from Harvard (1956), an M.A. with distinction from Columbia (1959), and a Ph.D. from Columbia (1966). Deeply committed to theatre and education, his plays for adults and children were produced around the country and at Lincoln Center, Eugene O'Neill Playwrights Conference, and The Manhattan Theatre Club, where he was playwright-in-residence. He consulted on Arts in Education for the New York Board of Education and the National Endowment for the Arts, and chaired the development of the Theatre Arts curriculum for the International Baccalaureate, now used in over one hundred countries. He was visiting professor at Harvard Graduate School of Education and distinguished teaching professor in Theatre Arts at SUNY Stony Brook, where he was named Outstanding Teacher of Theatre in American Higher Education (1996). He was an elegant human being who touched the lives of many friends, family members, and students. A memorial service will be held at Faculty House, Columbia University, 64 Morningside Drive, New York on Thursday, January 31 at 6pm. (212-854-1200). Prof. Levy was my playwriting professor at Stony Brook. I credit his encouragement for my continued work with playwriting, scriptwriting and film production from 1992 to the present. He is missed.

Jonathan Levy left a legacy of teachers and artists all over the world. Many of his students stayed in touch with him to get advice in their theatrical, television or film projects or their work in the classroom. He was a master teacher and mentor and it was an honor to have been his student and to have worked with him.

My favorite part of any day was stopping by Dr. Levy's office, tapping on the door and walking in to find him writing or reading - he'd look up - I'd sit down and we would begin to discuss theatre, or poetry, ethics, and on and on. He was adored by all who knew him.
