JULIA HOLLEMAN Obituary

HOLLEMAN--Julia Blythe.

(December 1, 1982 - May 31, 2018). For 35 brief years, she dazzled us with her wit, kindness and sardonic sense of humor, making the world a far less "hellish place" for those lucky enough to know her. Julia devoted her artistic life to creating incisive theater, elevating the "quality of our suffering" through her extraordinary writing. A graduate of Yale College and NYU Tisch's Dramatic Writing Program, Julia was brilliant, talented, creative and insightful, attributes sprinkled with a quirky, but charming naivete. She was fiercely protective of everyone she loved; passionate about feminism, social justice and shenanigans; an axe thrower, rock climber and world traveler. Julia died surrounded by her beloved fiance, Brian Corr; her parents, Craig and Vicki Holleman; her sisters, Elizabeth Armet and Emily Holleman; and her brother, Brett Holleman. She also leaves behind five wonderful and much-adored nieces and nephews. A service celebrating her life will be held at 11am Saturday, June 9th, 2018 at Joe's Pub, 425 Lafayette St., New York, NY 10003. Please, no flowers. Anyone so inclined is encouraged to donate their time or money to one of these organizations whose missions mattered to Julia: The Southern Poverty Law Center, Planned Parenthood or The 52nd Street Project.

I met Julia only briefly, and found her thoughtful and kind. I was hoping to see one of her plays. Very sad to hear this. My heart goes out to her family and friends.

Words cannot express how saddened I was to hear about Julia's passing. She lit up a room anytime she entered it, and although she wasn't a huge Yankee fan (like Emily was) she always made sure to console me if they lost. Julia was always so very respectful to her elders; I should know because I am old. She always managed to laugh at my silly attempts of magic tricks in the 322 elevator as she was a young child. I worked at 322 for 26 years and I can honestly say that it was an honor to know and serve Julia and the entire Holleman family. You became an extended family to me. Even though my English was not very good I lived vicariously through Julia's talks of travels as she always took time to patiently explain to me where she visited. To the entire Holleman family, although the miles may separate us you will always remain near and dear to my heart. May you be comforted during this very difficult time and know that you will be in my and my wife's thought and prayers. My sincerest condolences are being sent from Arizona. Respectfully and Sincerely,

Luciano and Mayra Gil

May the following thought--from William Wordsworth's "Intimations of Immortality"--be of some comfort to all of you who knew Julia. When my mother died, she left this for me to read a month after her burial:
What though the radiance that was once so
bright
Be now for ever taken from my sight;
Though nothing can bring back the hour
Of splendor in the grass, of glory in the flower;
We will grieve not, rather find,
Strength in what remains behind.

When we first met Julia in Kindergarten with our daughter she already displayed some of the characteristics that marked her as a woman - a deep voice, thoughtful opinions, grace and a refined aesthetic sense. Through the years a gentle humility, unusual in one so talented and beautiful, distinguished her. She had natural charm that was irresistible. Julia was magical.

Words cannot adequately express my profound sympathy for all of you, and for our extended family. It is impossible to see reason in why Julia's bright light would be extinguished so suddenly. May the memories of her life and the joy she brought to everyone who knew her bring solace at this difficult time. We are richer for having known her. 52nd Street Project, a gift is on the way. Please keep her dream alive. x Laura
