KERNAN--Katherine,

long-standing resident of Carnegie Hill, New York City, and Southampton, Long Island. Born July 23, 1952 and raised in New Haven, Connecticut, Kate was the second child of Suzanne and Alvin B. Kernan. At age 18, she enrolled as a freshman at Yale University, where she graduated with honors, B.A. in 1974, and M.Phil. in American Studies in 1985. She was married to classmate Robert E. Rubin from 1978 to 1990. A quiet, intelligent woman, she enjoyed reading and research, including 19th Century American Painting and the Arts and Crafts movement. For several years she worked at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Recently Kate collected Native American baskets, concentrating on the early 1900s, tracing the history of the tribes along with actual basket makers themselves. Sadly she left us on February 19th of this year. A devoted daughter, she cared for her mother during her last years. Kate leaves behind two brothers, a sister, her father, and close friends. We shall miss her subtle charm and kindness. In lieu of flowers, contributions to one's own charities would honor her memory.
