LAWRENCE PHILLIPS Obituary

PHILLIPS--Lawrence S.,

died peacefully at his home in Florida on September 11, 2015. Born March 20, 1927 in New York, Larry was the son of Madelyn Shapiro Phillips and Seymour J. Phillips. He received his B.A. from Princeton University after serving in the Armed Forces during World War II. He was former President and Chairman of the Phillips-Van Heusen Corporation, the apparel company founded by his grandfather and great- grandfather in the 19th century. Larry was an active philanthropist who in 1985 founded the American Jewish World Service (AJWS), the international relief organization, where he served as president and active board member for many years. Larry made the first gift that created the Phillips Ambulatory Care Center of Beth Israel Hospital, and was a devoted member of the New York Beth Israel community, including the School of Nursing. In 1995 Larry moved to Boca Raton where he became a vital participant in the South Palm Beach County Jewish Federation. There he funded and participated in an annual Thanksgiving lunch for 600 needy elderly people. He also contributed funds to a special program with the Joint Distribution Committee that brought orphans to Israel and sponsored their education. He served on the Federation's Israel and Overseas Committee for over 10 years. Deeply engaged in civil and human rights issues in the U.S., Israel and throughout the world, Larry was a political activist who gave generously to candidates and causes. Larry was passionately devoted to Tikkun Olam, repairing the world. Larry loved learning and appreciated lively political discourse. President Richard Nixon included him on his 1971 Enemies' List, a source of endless pride to Larry and his family. Larry is survived by his daughter Laura Phillips, his son David L. Phillips and daughter-in-law Sarah Phillips; his grandchildren Joseph Phillips Black, Sasha Phillips Black, Tara Phillips and Maya Phillips; his sister Carol Green; his former wife Ann Phillips, mother of his children; and former wife Roxane Lipton. Memorial services will be at a later date. Contributions may be made in his honor to the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County, 9901 Donna Klein Blvd., Boca Raton, FL 33428.

Larry was a close friend and associate during our years in the apparel industry. An extraordinary executive and always there to support and to work with those of us who managed the industry that was once America's 2nd largest employer. While serving as directors of AAMA He and I worked together in founding The American Apparel Foundation which continues to donate new clothing to disaster victims. Like everywhere he lived, others Heaven will enjoy his presence.

an employee in the early 80's. Both Larry and Seymour always had a smile for me. I remember them fondly. I was proud to work for the firm.
