MICHAEL GRUTERS Obituary

GRUTERS--Michael Spencer.

January 11, 1940-August 9, 2015 Michael Spencer Gruters of Manhattan, NY, passed on suddenly at home. Beloved husband, love of my life for 32 short years, Elizabeth Blakeslee Gruters, Father of his adored son Michael Spencer York Gruters and a daughter from a previous marriage Elizabeth Spencer Franklin. A brilliant renaissance man, whose accomplishments never outweighed his vision and creativity. His extraordinary complexity, mathematical and analytical genius is reflected in some of his projects: development of the first shared multitasking environment linking mainframe (IBM) and mini (DEC) computers; creation of pattern recognition film scanning and analysis programs for high energy physics research; wrote early (DEC) disassembler, assembler, editor and operating systems; all contributing to faculty status at Princeton University. Contributed to work on capturing first live pictures of the moon. Supervised military and civilian personnel at a top secret "strategic air command base" in Omaha, NE. Developed the first text editing/ composition publishing system to print newspapers, Pocono Record, Pa. Designed and wrote a system that would reconstruct the editorial and classified data base of the New York Daily News. Patent application for "color correction of NTSC video graphics systems" by Textronics Corporation. Created a new method of "Quantizing" whereas a video image would be significantly compressed with the least detectable visual difference; Designed inlaid rose and gray granite stone sidewalk at 1020 Madison Avenue NYC, completed an exhausted interaction of color study in oils of 12 canvas boards on color field negation. Extensive work in NYC in wood working, stone laying, interior and exterior design. 45 Patent or patent pending inventions and creations which include Digital Juke box (memory cards), LVD Video compression, NFL field goal analysis, Windows O/S replacement, Moving sidewalks, Concept boat (solar/wind/tidal/wave), NFL helmet shock, Submerged tunnels, Tubular arched bridges, Valve shaft (cam shaft replacement), Tidal Energy design, Urban wind farm, Waste conveyor, PETS: Pet Environmental Transfer System, East river tidal/solar power, Smokeless ashtrays, Super Duper Market, Paradoxice (casino dice game) Fairway patch, Book wings, #45: World Peace. He was an accomplished photographer with work displayed in restaurants and public spaces, a wood sculptor, painter and harmonica player. His love of music began on the corners in New Jersey singing with Dion, and extended through his life to an extensive vinyl collection and rebuilding of tube amplifiers and stereos. His hobbies included golf, billiards, blackjack, wood working, rebuilding cars, wood boats, model airplanes and trains, electronics and analog watches, driving BMW cars, boating, music and exploring life outside of any boundary. He was as large as life itself, and knew all it's joys and pains. His limitless talents will be missed by all who knew him; his gentle decency and tenderness by his family. He was a good man, a great man, a man of understanding. We will continue to reach beyond the stars Dad. Now you are at peace; in time we will join you. Time is eternal Beastie, you know that. No beginning or end. Eternally yours, always and forever.

My thoughts with you and your son. A very accomplished man lost not only to you and family but to all that benefited from his talent and knowledge.

There is no one harder to lose, than a marriage partner, a soulmate. We feel your sorrow. Luckily, you have a wonderful son, and together you can fill the void with all the wonderful memories you had together.
He's gone physically, but not psychically.
Jules and I are very sorry for your great loss.
