Petrea Durand Obituary

1928 - 2016
Petrea (Petie) Hoving Durand passed on June 16th. Petie was born in New York City August 24, 1928 to Mary Osgood Field, a descendant of Samuel Osgood the first Postmaster General of the United States, and Walter Hoving, who helped lead Tiffany & Company to worldwide success. Petie was predeceased by her brother, Thomas Hoving, former Director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In 1954, she married Harry "Buddy" Durand with whom she had three sons.

Petie was educated at Miss Hewitt's school, Dana Hall and Vassar College. She was a talented horseback rider who qualified for the United States Equestrian team and an avid sailor. She sailed classic wooden boats throughout Long Island Sound for most of her life. From an early encounter with Al Jolson to the poetry of Bob Dylan and the Beatles, Petie was a lifelong music lover.

As a young assistant buyer in the women's junior dress department at Lord and Taylor, Petie displayed an eye for discovering the best French couture and traveled abroad several times a year scouting collections. Eventually working her way up to head buyer at Bonwit Teller, Petie negotiated an exclusive agreement with Brooklyn's Junior Sophisticates and introduced the world to a young designer named Anne Klein.

She later worked for Equitable Life where she sold insurance to individuals and non-profit organizations, some of whose clients suffered from addiction. As a result, Petie became a passionate advocate for the treatment of addiction as an illness.

In the 1990's, Petie fell in love with the miniature pincher dog breed, nicknamed "minpins." She was charmed by the dogs because she thought they looked like miniature horses. An early adopter of Apple computers and the Internet, Petie helped organized a nationwide organization dedicated to minpins. Learning there were minpins in need of rescue, she and a group of dedicated minpin owners harnessed their resources to help preserve the breed. They founded the Internet Miniature Pinscher Service, "IMPS" with a mission to distribute information about the breed and provide foster care, adoptive homes, and veterinary care. As a founder, Ms. Durand with other members of the board, created an operation that 19 years later would become the Nation's largest single-breed rescue service. IMPS has rescued over 20,000 dogs and has 500 volunteers throughout the United States and Canada. Taking on a leadership role, Petie dedicated the remainder of her life to this effort, even after macular degeneration impaired her vision. Using large fonts and services for the blind she read and responded to the hundreds of emails she received daily. She met each day with stubborn determination and passion.

She is survived by three sons, including Samuel Osgood Hoving, of New York, Thomas Holmes Durand of Randolph, Massachusetts, her sister-in-law, Nancy Bell Hoving of New York and niece Petrea Hoving Leventhal of London, UK, a granddaughter, three grand nieces, three minpins and a Siamese cat.

Donations in her memory can be sent to the Internet Miniature Pinscher Service, Inc., IMPS www.minpinrescue.org.

I will always remember Mrs Durand as being a person with a devoted personality. When she took a stand you knew there was no backing down. And she put every drop of sweat and blood into her cause whether it is an animal that may be suffering or a personal cause that she believed in.There was no holding her back until the wrong was right.I always looked up to her for that reason. She was never a phoney just a person who spoke her mind. She encouraged me to do the same.I always remember the smile on your face, when summer was beginning and you were on your way to Shelter Island and you would wish me a nice summer.I hope you are looking down on us now with that same smile.RIP Mrs Durand

what a very sad loss for Petie's family, IMPS family and the Min Pins all around the world. This loss will be realized for years to come, Thank you Petie for teaching me so much about compassion and how to save something from a life of pain and suffering. You will be honored by the powers above for your tireless work and contributions while here on this earth. I have no doubt that your final act of kindness will be to stop at the rainbow bridge to gather all the accumulated souls that have no one to collect them. Whatever happens in the future I for one am proud to have worked under you in your beloved IMPS rescue organization. Thank you.

Petie, our Den mother. To her family, I was delighted to read about Petie's life, to know a bit more about her. I'll aways remember our discussions about the dogs, Bob Dylan, wood boats, my fears when I first got the little brain damaged Boom, story telling, and our beloved Macs. I am thankful I was given the opportunity to meet you and your crew last September, it was so great to sit there and get loved on by a small gaggle of of pups and of course Zimmie. I was missing my own that week and the timing was perfect. I know we will survive as a group because we are a determined bunch and you wouldn't have it any other way, but I will miss knowing you are there. there's a dance in the old dame yet toujours gai toujours gai

My husband Rick and I have been a volunteer 3 years. If it was not for IMPS we wouldn't have the knowledge of these wonderful dogs. She loved min pins and you could tell. We have had 3 foster successes because of the wonderful experiences we have had. It takes a really tough lady to trust so many that she had never met. Thank you Petie! You will be missed by our family and the whole IMPS family! You are always going to be in our hearts! To Petie's familyWe are so sorry for your loss and you are also in our thoughts and prayers.
