SALDICH--Robert J.,

retired CEO of Raychem Corporation in Menlo Park, CA, and former Chairman of the American Electronics Association and The Commonwealth Club of California, has died in Palo Alto. Bob was born in New York City in 1933, the son of Bertha and Alexander Saldich. He graduated from Rice University, Houston, TX, in 1955 with a Bachelor of Arts degree and in 1956 with a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering. He was chosen as a Distinguished Alumnus of Rice in 2006 "For his leadership in business and commitment to public service." He went on to Harvard Business School, Class of 1961, where he finished as a Baker Scholar and was chosen as an assistant to the legendary professor, General George Doriot. He was later appointed to the Visiting Committee of Harvard Business School. Bob came to California as Assistant to the President of Kaiser Aluminum in 1962. He married Anne Rawley and their son, Alan, was born in 1964. That same year he was recruited by a small materials science firm in Menlo Park, CA, Raychem Corp. He started the European operations of Raychem in England in 1966 and succeeded the founder as CEO in 1990. Bob leaves his wife, Virginia, his son Alan (Nancy), and his devoted step-children, Tad (Eleanor) and Stan (Heather) Thomas, Melinda Thomas (Michael Fabozzi), and Meg Thomas Dudley (Scott) and 12 grandchildren. The Memorial Service will be at 2pm, December 27 at Skylawn Memorial Park in San Mateo, CA. Donations online to or by mail to the San Mateo County Historical Association, 2200 Broadway, Redwood City, CA 94063 in his name will preserve the archive of Raychem.
