Stephen Paul Sobol

Stephen Paul Sobol, of White Plains, NY, died on December 23, 2016. He was 61 years old.

He was born on September 9th, 1955 and grew up in Short Hills, NJ. He was class President during his attendance at Millburn Middle School and graduated from Millburn High School in 1973. He attended Syracuse University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree majoring in Biology. He undertook post graduate studies in Biochemistry at McGill University in Montreal, Canada.

Upon leaving McGill University, he started his successful career in engineering at Simoff Engineering where he began an enduring interest in environmental safety. His introduction to the firm was made through his lifelong friend Michael Simoff whose father founded the company. He subsequently worked for several years with the well-known information technology and engineering firm Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) where he gained additional environmental safety and engineering experience.

In 2002, he started his own company, ESH Sciences Inc, to provide consulting services in the fields of environmental, safety and health sciences. ESH Sciences performed environmental impact and pollution prevention assessments for aircraft, artillery, munitions, ships and electronics systems. ESH Sciences' clients included the US Army, Navy and Coast Guard, the Department of Energy's Clean Coal Program and the Environmental Protection Agency. Most recently, ESH Sciences was providing environmental compliance services for GE Aviation which was acquired by the TransDigm Group and continued the relationship. In addition, he worked on the environmental safety programs at Sikorsky Helicopters, a division of Lockheed-Martin, and for Butler Aerospace. He was highly admired and respected by co-workers for his mentoring abilities and over 30 years' experience in the environmental safety field.

His father, Saul O. Sobol and mother, Florence Sobol predeceased him. He married and divorced Svetlana Sokolov. He is survived by his brother Robert E. Sobol and by numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and dear friends who will universally remember him for his kind hearted and benevolent spirit.

In partnership with the Department of Nanoengineering at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), the Sobol Family has established the Stephen P. Sobol Fund in his honor. The Sobol family has donated to the Department of Nanoengineering a large number of nanotechnology related internet domain names formerly owned by ESH Sciences envisioned as a network to foster collaboration and research in the fields of nanotechnology and environmental health safety.
