Susan lived in my neighborhood and we frequently crossed paths as we went about our business, and we also met in all the places where publishing took us over the years. It was always such a pleasure to see her smile here or there as we navigated our lives. Rest in peace, dear Susan. Maybe we will meet wherever you have gone. I will miss your familiar figure crossing 72nd Street.

Susan and I were neighbors and frequently passed one another crossing the street with a wave and good wishes. We ran into each other at book fairs across the country, and delighted in the many ways that our mutual commitment to books so often crossed our paths. We never became close friends, but I always looked forward to our many unplanned meetings. I shall miss knowing that I shall never see her welcoming smile again.

We often met by chance, in our mutual neighborhood, and far afield when the BEA moved its convention around the country yearly. We always vowed to meet with intention, but life swept us both up and coincidence was so obliging. Now you are gone. I shall miss chatting with you at street corners and seeing you, the eye of the storm at publishing event after publishing event. Your lovely smile and welcome will be missed by all of us who shared your love of books and the industry that for so many years has been our larger family. I am sure you are bustling around the hereafter, enjoying everything you encounter. I shall miss you.

Susan was a long time board member, supporter and superstar volunteer for Goddard Riverside. She helped start our annual book fair (now in it's 36th year) and ran an amazing series of Meet the Author Dinners for more than 25 years. Susan raised millions of dollars to support the work of Goddard Riverside and was a tireless advocate. We will miss her indominable spirit, dedication to her community and her infectious smile.

I got to know Susan while she was doing publicity for Scribner's, where she helped promote the young adult science books I wrote for her company. She was not only adept at her work - and a great asset to the book publishing world - but a warm and engaging person. I'm sure she'll be widely missed.
