Losing a loved one is never easy, but our loving God promises to give the strength and courage you'll need to endure, and to cope with the pain of your loss. He also promises to hold your hand every step of the way. Isaiah 40:29, 41:10,13*

Sr. Mary Alice Gallin was my professor of history at the College of New Rochelle. She taught me in her class on the French Revolution, and guided my theses in European history seminars.

Her 1961 book, German Resistance to Hitler; Ethical and Religious Factors , had an introduction from Allen Dulles. It was a book that inspired my own study of Germany's descent from a fragile democracy to dictatorship, and highlighted the complexities involved in judging the decisions of Germans in that era.

Both in my time at CNR and afterward, Sr. Alice was a welcoming presence, with the mind and memory of a scholar and teacher, and the heart of an Ursuline to all her former students. In 2017, she received a lifetime achievement award from the college to a standing ovation from those present. Her death, even at 97, comes too soon for all of us who have so admired her over the last six decades.
