Louise Parrish Obituary

PARRISH--Louise, Master Goldsmith and teacher. Born on December 20, 1925 in Montreal, PQ, Canada, died on September 18, 2008 at her home in Manhattan. From 1974 to 2008, Ms. Parrish was a teacher of ancient and classical jewelry at the Kulicke Stark Academy of Jewelry Arts and later at the Jewelry Arts Institute. She was also a co-founder 31 years ago with her longtime friend Winifred Wager of Parrish/Wager a business which encompassed classical and contemporary handmade gold pieces. Another aspect of the business was the restoration of pre-Colombian gold artifacts. Ms. Parrish will be forever loved and sadly missed by her students, friends, colleagues and jewelry partner. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Contributions may be made to the Foods Programs at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 213 W. 82nd St., New York, NY 10024.

If Louise made me do things the hard way it always proved to be the right way.
She had an unerring eye, and a giving heart and an artist's soul. I feel very lucky to have studied with her.

Bonjour Louise. I just heard about your departure. I am going to miss you...

Do you remember? You were 18, I was 19, we worked in the same office, and after work we stood in front of your house talking and talking, sharing our joys and our sorrows, and laughing so much….We would go home for supper, and meet again at night for endless conversations about our dreams …

And then, in our twenties, we parted to follow our hearts…

You left our hometown, Farnham, in Quebec, and from Hollywood to New York, you finally found that form of art where you became the great goldsmith that you were in cloisonné and jewellery. What a great creator you were, and, with your infinite generosity, you shared your talents with so many students. When I read what they had to say about you, I am not surprise. I am just so proud! I wish to thank you for your long lasting and warm friendship.

A bientôt Louise, in a near futur I will join you somewhere, and again we will have those nice endless conversations about... our next life!

Au revoir Louise. Je t’aime. Colette

Oh louise, how i will miss your exceptional "eye", that pristine sense of beauty, and the patience, deliberation and mastery which allowed you always to capture it so perfectly in your work. i will always treasure the gifts you shared with me and the time we spent together. our field has lost one of its guiding lights.

Louise,
we have lost a wonderful spirit, spark and mentor. You taught me to be patient, to figure things out and to execute work with perfection. I met you in 1989 and studied with you all these years. You gave o f yourself and helped dreams come true. I miss you already

Louise, some of the pieces we worked on together brought us to a deep spiritual connection in mind, heart, and spirit. I am comforted, when I look at my best jewelry creations, by the rich blessings you imparted to my work--with you most dreams were possible. BTW, do they let you design your own crown? :-)

I'll never forget meeting Louise for the first time, seeing her astonishing body of work, and being blown away by it. Louise was a creative force all her own, uniting the very distant past with a very exciting present.

Louise was a woman of her time. Full of sass and spunk she never really did become old. Smoked a chimney that one did. I bet she's causing a riot in heaven.

Louise was a dedicated teacher who was generous with her knowledge and wanted to share it. I am glad to have had the chance to study with her; what she taught me will continue to be reflected in my work.

Louise was a wonderful friend and mentor to us. She is among the many people at the Jewelry Arts who changed our lives, and we are most grateful. Being in the jewelry trade, we see firsthand the influence of Louise and the other teachers at Jewelry Arts Institute in both the industry and the world of jewelry arts and craft; they started a movement towards a greater appreciation of high karat gold and a more ancient or classical aesthetic.

Dear Louise, you were my teacher, source of inspiration and above all my friend.
I will never forget us singing in class:
Marinella,
Ah, reste encore dans mes bras.....
.....
vers un pays mysterieux,
le beau pay des reves bleu....

I hope we may all meet again in such a place.

Louise changed my life and will live on in my heart. I take comfort in the words of Kahlil Gibran:

...Only when you drink from the river of silence shall you indeed sing.
And when you have reached the mountain top, then you shall begin to climb.
And when the earth shall claim your limbs, then shall you truly dance.
Kahlil Gibran "The Prophet" 1923

I met Louise back in 1980, I was a freshman at Pace University but I also took jewelry classes. She was my teacher at the Kulicke Stark Jewelry Academy. For the next 28 years she became a dear friend. She met my daughter, Eftyhia when the latter was only 7 years old. Years later Louise also became her teacher at the Academy. Eftyhia loved her craftsmanship, when she got married a few years back, she asked Louise to design and make her wedding band and ring. We stayed close with Louise, she was always there for me and stood by me. I respected her and loved her work, we used to talk for hours on how she worked with gold. Today, I cherish everything she and Winnie designed and made for me. For the past 12 years I live in Greece, I never failed to call her and visit her no matter how short my trip was. The same thing happened last week, I saw Louise on Wednesday night on the 17th of September. She was in good spirits; we talked about our favorite topic, Jewelry, and her favorite actor Sidney Poitier. Before I left she made me promise to send pictures of little Persephone and Robert (my grandchildren). We kissed and said goodbye...

We will all miss Louise at Jewelry Arts Institue. She encouraged me to be daring and fearless in trying new techniques and to know that by making mistakes, I would learn much more and develop more solid skills. Her humor and pluck were an example in aging with grace and I hope to have half of her energy and enthusiasm when I reach 60.

I really feel that Louise is staring over my shoulder to see if I'm doing this right, as she did for many years as my teacher, mentor and friend.
After 20 years and a modicum of success in this passionate field of creativity I still have the pieces of a project she was helping me to birth. I love you Louise and will miss you like mad. Have a grand time on your new adventures.
