HERTZ--David Bendel, 92, died on June 13 in Miami, FL. Dr. Hertz was a Professor Emeritus at the University of Miami, where he served as a Distinguished Professor of Artificial Intelligence, director of the Intelligent Computer Systems Research Institute, and professor of management science as well as law. He was a director and general partner of McKinsey and Company, Inc. in New York City for 20 years. He was a professor at Columbia University, where he earned his BA, BS, and PhD; he also earned an MS from the U.S. Navy Postgraduate School and a JD from New York University Law School. Hertz was internationally renowned for his work in artificial intelligence and neural networks, and was a specialist in operations research, systems and risk analysis, and computer law. Dr. Hertz was a founding member and president of the Operations Research Society, as well as president of the Institute of Management Sciences and the International Federation of Operations Research Societies. He published extensively and authored several books throughout his career. He also served as a Commander in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Barbara Valentine, their daughters Barbara Burr and Valentine Kass, four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. A private memorial has been held.
