JAMES HILLMAN Obituary

HILLMAN--James, 1926-2011, nominee for the Pulitzer prize for Revisioning Psychology, awarded the Presidents Medal of Honor, Florence, Italy, and radical founder of Archetypal Psychology, died at his home in Thompson, CT from complications of cancer. Dr. Hillman was 85 years old, alternately holding court with friends and colleagues and deep in exchange with his beloved wife, artist Margot McLean. Born in Atlantic City, Hillman resided in Europe for more than three decades. He is the author of more than twenty books translated into twenty five languages including a number one best seller, "The Soul's Code," and his opus, "A Terrible Love of War." A ten volume Uniform Edition of Hillman's uncollected published works is in progress, with six titles currently in print. James' stunning wit, generosity of mind and heart, brilliant conversation, and joy in the daily round will be terribly missed. He leaves behind a used pair of tap shoes, a yard full of exotic chickens, mornings in Thompson, nighttimes in New York, friends from all over the world, and most importantly his irrepressible collaborator in life and love, Margot. Predeceased by his first wife Catharina Kempe, remembered by his second wife Patricia Berry, Hillman is survived by his sisters Sue Becker and Sybil Pike, brother Joel, four children from his first marriage, Julia, Carola, Susanne, Laurence and five grandchildren. A Memorial Service in New York City will be announced at a later date. For those who wish, donations may be made to: Spring Publications, PO Box 230212 New York, NY 10023 in support of his Uniform Edition.

Thank you for being a stone in the shoe, a thorn in the side, a Trickster - and an illuminating intellect, provocative, refusing to be cosy. Such a pity we won't now have that much-discussed visit back to Ireland. You will be missed.

You responded to a young man's written plea with kindness and direction ... taking precious time for one you didn't even know ... a Master in the true sense ... thank you for all you gave to so many ... peaceful journey ...

Dear James Hillman. How delightedly we shall remember your call to image, to poetic language, to the practice of beauty - what gifts you've spread along our path with your silver voice and sparks of sulphur. I read everything of yours, explored your mercurial mind in my PhD, was so glad to meet you through the wonderful conferences and seminars of the London Convivium for Archetypal Studies. You've winged your way through my teaching ever since, enchanting and annoying students, who'd take flight with you then despair at essay time because 'it's ALL a quote!' I still have the lovely postcard you wrote to me in thanks for such a little point we'd discussed. I wish I'd gone on to ask you more about Corbin's influence..... maybe next time. Greet Hermes for us. With much gratitude and love.

With endless gratitude,

Marilyn DeMario

Dear James. Thank you for reminding me of the Pelican in class at Pacifica. The alchemical symbol of renewal, and the pelican's part in the alchemical process of breaking open one's outer shell in order to reveal an inner world. Your many gifts continue to bless our future.
