So sorry to hear of the loss of this generous and energetic spirit of a man. It seemed to me that he enthusiastically embraced the act of looking at art with a humble open curiosity, and had so much fun doing it. I suspect that others came away from conversations with him feeling as I did, elevated by his kind words, generous attention and interest. He possessed a real gift of graciousness, the ability to make others feel smart. Thoughts of him will surely create more positive forces for good in his memory.

My students are all between one half and one third of my age. Stokley was the very best example of how to treat a younger colleague. He was warm, inclusive, funny and self effacing. Being around him, all notions of who was older, more intelligent or accomplished seemed to drop away. His entire personality seemed to say " I just can't wait to share this with YOU." Randy Taplin

Dear Jeanne and Extended Towles Family,
Wishing you added strength at this trying time. I know from your stories about life with Stokely that he was just the best husband, father, granddad, and friend. He contributed so tremendously to his community and positively impacted many people; you must all be very proud. Though not present in your daily lives now, he will always be there - guarding and counseling each of you.
Best,
Kathe Dodd

I knew him as a friend, an uncle, boat captain and everything in between. He always had a smile and and a heartfelt "Hey, David-o" that made me feel warm inside. I'll miss you Uncle Stoke!

As his nephew, I was granted a different view of Uncle Stokley. He was a father-figure, friend and motivator. I miss him terribly and look forward to seeing the family soon.

Stokley was a mentor, dear friend, “cheerleader” and a second father figure to me. I was so lucky to work with him in the 80s and 90s.
He taught me to put family first, keep things simple, be humble, be kind to everyone, recount stories because people relate to stories, and to give back if even in the smallest of ways. His exuberance, intelligence, endless enthusiasm, wonderful spirit, and humility were awe-inspiring. There are many great business minds, but few that have such humble and generous souls. His greatest joy and happiness came from Jeanne and his family; his face always lit up when he spoke of all of you. Stokes, I want you to know you made such a lasting impact on me and how I live my life. You will be so greatly missed, but always remembered.

As a freshman banker, one day I was invited to a 'Partners Lunch'. I was busy working and arrived late. Concerned I might have offended the respected gentleman, Stokley noticed me when I entered the room late. I offered to explain why I was tardy. I began to explain I was helping a client in Paris, he kindly reminded me that is what we do at BBH -we support our clients. Thank you Mr. Towles, you gave me my start in life.

Dear Jeanne and family, sending love and prayers to the entire Towles family. I am still processing this very sad news as you all are. I am also grateful for the almost 16 years Stokley and I had working together on so many projects inside and outside BBH. With the support of a wonderful family, he lived a life well lived, and his memory will live on in all our hearts.

Stokes was such a mentor and good friend. An amazing student of life and cultures, and always with a twinkle in his eye. He was a larger than life story teller who somehow made everyone sure they were his very best friend....
His intellect never quit. I feel so lucky to have had so much time with him at work and traveling. Susan Livingston

I was so terribly saddened to learn of his death. having just spoken to him a few days before he died. I met him years ago when I was a student at the Museum School and his warmth, friendliness, and love and support of the arts will never be forgotten.
