MICHAEL TROSSMAN Obituary

TROSSMAN--Michael Klaus, of Stuttgart Germany died November 10th in New York City of natural causes. He was 66. Michael was the dearly beloved widower of prominent New York literary figure Wendy E. Weil and son of Russian born soldier Nickolas Trossman and Austrian Nurse Freidle Loder. Michael lived a bohemian lifestyle as a stalwart New York City Illustrator who's works earned him residencies in distinguished publications such as Esquire, The New York Times, Rolling Stone, The New Yorker, The Village Voice, Vanity Fair, GQ and many more. He is survived by his two sons Joshua and Andrew and grandson Dane. I never met Michael, but I am good friends with his son Joshua. From 1999-2005 I owned a blues record label in Los Angeles. The reason I formed the label was to help local Los Angeles black blues artists record their music and tour. Two of our artists toured nationally and we released close to a dozen CDs which gave paying work to many black blues artists. The blues world post the 80s has been dominated by white artists. I formed the label to give something back. Michael was a major contributor to the label because he was a life long blues lover and he wanted to help out struggling artists. His incredibly generous gift helped us release CDs that meant everything to the African American blues scene in Southern California.

I never met Michael personally, but we were both members of the same music discussion groups at the online magazine Salon back in the late 90s, early 2000s, and we had quite a few lively and opinionated exchanges in those few years. He had a fierce intelligence, he knew his music, he knew his own mind, and he took guff from no one on those forums. I knew his love of music, particularly, was deep and rich. It gave me great joy to learn that he was such a splendid and acclaimed visual artists as well. He brought much to the music topics on those old discussion boards. My condolences to his family and friends.

Worked with him for years; learned from him. Did great work for David Mamet,( with whom I still share same birthdate.) American Buffalo is still a classic. Michael did the great artwork for him. Still miss him.
