To the Shukat Family:
I am deeply saddened to have done a search for Peter and found of his passing. We got to know each other in the hospital - having both had the same surgeon. I would check in with Peter through emails from time to time to hear the uplifting stories of his family and the time spent with his grandchildren. He was so proud of you all. This is a sad day...my email buddy has moved on. To his family I am sure you miss him terribly- just KNOW from someone you will never meet how much you all meant to him

Everything about Peter had been a pleasure, not to mention fun, since I originally crossed his threshold many long years ago. We began with a professional relationship, and he became, to use his words, a real good friend. Sad day.

I just heard about Peter's passing from our Jamaica High School Alumni Association.
Please confirm if Peter was active in drama at Jamaica HS. If so, we both spent time together in the Drama club with our speech teacher and mentor Roy Greenfeld.
I remember Peter as a very fine person and a terrific dramatic actor. I have fond memories of him.

I had the privilege of having Peter represent my agency in a lawsuit he initiated on my behalf. He negotiated a superb out of court settlement for me. I was so thankful; I didn't know him on any personal or family level however; I was closer friends with his brother Scott, also a terrific and kind person.

It was not easy, but Peter never took his eye off the ball--and the result was a grand slam game winning home run for us all.

February 1978 was a great time for us all in CBS Records International--we had finally achieved our long held goal of signing Julio Iglesias the Latin super star and soon to be worldwide legend.

The contract was signed by Julio at our Rue de Franklin Roosevelt European headquarters office in Paris. Julio was represented by his special hand picked legal "consiglieri" Peter Shukat while CBS was represented by Peter de Rougement, Paul Russell and by the "New CBS Records Young Lawyer On The Block"" --me..

The rest as they say is music industry history.

The final closing and signing of the contract wasn't easy for any of us--at the time some thought it would be impossible to pull off. Among other things Julio had a multitude of confusing and contradictory contracts with other smaller record companies located in various countries around the world. Some of these contracts had expired and some hadn't, but for most of them is was almost impossible to figure out what rights to Julio these companies had and didn't have. Things were so tied up in knots that the over the top contract signing celebration dinner was held at the Plaza Athenee 3 days before the signing.

A large part of the credit for keeping calm, carrying on and carefully getting Julio and the rest of us across the finish line belonged to Peter Shukat.

From my earlier days as a lawyer for RCA Records, Peter and I had already developed an excellent working relationship. While we were always strong advocates for our clients, we both never got into the hard ball, zero sum games playing shenanigans that (too) often characterized many record industry artist contract negotiations.

Right from the beginning of the Julio negotiations, when I found out that I would be working with Peter, I had an underlying confidence that somehow we'd get all the complications sorted out and figure out a way to get this all important deal done.

Over the coming decades I worked with Peter on a number of other artist contract negotiations, but I know we both agreed that the signing of Julio's contract in Paris (days AFTER having already having the chef's table celebration dinner) was an experience that could not be topped.

About 10 years ago, I came across a copy of the official Julio contract signing photo from Paris and I sent Peter a copy. I pointed out that all of us at the signing were dressed up in proper suits and ties but that one guy I was having trouble identifying (?!) was wearing a big collared cowboy shirt. Peter confessed that it was him.

Deep condolences to the Shukat family. Peter was a fantastic lawyer. A rare, straight-shooter, who really cared and was a generous man. I will miss him greatly.

Just the name "Peter Shukat" embodied wisdom, strength and power. He was known to many people in many ways. To his family, as a proud father and husband. To his practice, as a pillar and a rock. To the industry, as an entertainment expert, and a legal guru. Peter had a brilliant legal mind and his experience and knowledge of the business cannot be matched. To our family company Experience Hendrix, and to me, personally, Peter was an incredible ally and tremendous supporter. This business can be a fierce battle ground at times but we always felt confident with Peter because we knew we had the best and brightest counsel representing us. He was important on so may levels, not the least of which as my friend. His colorful use of words, and his brand of wit made for never a dull moment. I don't know how New York will ever be the same without him...Our lives certainly won't. Peter will be sorely missed, but in his absence one thing is for sure...he will always be loved and remembered!

My life is richer for having known Peter. Peter was a soulful guy with an enormous and generous heart. My deep condolences to Yvette and his children and friends.

It was always a pleasure dealing with Peter, who was never less than intelligent, reasonable and kind. I tried to visit him whenever I came to NYC on business when I was with the Warner Music Group. I especially recall one evening when he was one of our guests at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame dinner at the Waldorf. My best wishes to the family during this time of terrible loss.
