SIDEO FROMBOLUTI Obituary

FROMBOLUTI--Sideo.

The artist Sideo Fromboluti passed away Sunday, November 23rd from natural causes. He was 94. He was born in Hershey, PA of Italian immigrants during the Great Depression. He was the first of his family to attend college having won the only scholarship offered by his high school to the Tyler College of Art. He subsequently earned a BFA and Masters degree. He was drafted into the Army during WWII completing his service in Junction City, KS. Always a passionate and accomplished painter, he moved with his wife and fellow artist, Nora Speyer to New York City in 1947. He exhibited his work and was involved with the 10th Street art scene, counting as his friends the artists who were major figures of the Abstract Expressionist movement. He had numerous solo shows, one at the Carnegie Museum of Art in 1998. He was represented by the Darthea Speyer Gallery in Paris, France for many years. He was a founding member of the Landmark Gallery in NYC and the Longpoint Gallery in Provincetown, MA. Both institutions were important to their communities, Landmark Gallery in the early days of SoHo and Longpoint Gallery as a center of the Provincetown art scene. He was a member of the National Academy of Design (NA). He leaves behind his wife of 69 years, Nora Speyer, his two children, Christopher Fromboluti, Iona Fromboluti and grandchildren, Sara Fromboluti and Matthew Fromboluti.

The Fromboluti's have been missed, now, in Truro & Wellfleet for a while. The Cape and the woods are not the same without them. Every time we drive by the old Frombo sign we feel a great emptiness.
