MALIN--Irving.

On December 3 the Viking of the printed page sailed away from home, age 80. Professor Emeritus, CCNY. Stanford PhD (at age 24) by way of Thomas Jefferson High School, Jamaica High School and Queens College. Brilliant, fearless literary critic; wise- cracking, soft-spoken recluse, generous patron of periodicals and foundations. Championed neglected, new and off beat writing. Won time at Yaddo and Huntington Library. Author of books on Faulkner, Bellow, Styron, Capote and others. Co-editor of books on Pynchon,Gass, Garrett, and others. Prolific reviewer. Unforgettable character who never learned to swim, type, drive or tie his shoes properly. Survived by wife Ruth Lief Malin, son Mark Charles (Rina) Malin, grandson Andrew, Charles and James, daughter Leila Chintaman, sister-in-law Nancy Kelley Hunter, son in spirit Rodney Ramirez, good friend Nicholas Birns, dedicated aides Tajewattie Bridgepaul and Shelly Ann Robinson, and devoted physician William M.
