SMITHEN--Charles Sherwood 72. Died while body surfing, January 14 in Palm Beach, Florida. Raised in Winnipeg, Canada, Charles completed his Fellowship in Cardiology in NY and London. He was accredited with developing the first Echocardiography department at New York Hospital. In the mid-seventies, he joined with Dr. Martin Post to develop a world-renowned Cardiology practice. In 1995 he was one of the founding partners of The New York Cardiology Associates, where he served as the first President. In addition to a clear and analytic mind and a passion for Medicine, Charles had a tremendous energy and zest for life, and was a true Renaissance Man. He and his wife, Barbara, bought acreage in Mattituck, NY and developed an award- winning vineyard, Sherwood House Vineyards. In addition to his beloved wife, Barbara, Charles leaves behind his two children from his first marriage, Kevin (Montclair, NJ) and Lindsay (Washington, DC), their spouses, Corinne and Jeremy (Kirsch), and five granddaughters, Chloe, Felicia and Scarlett (Smithen) and Talia and Taylor (Kirsch); his brother, Rob Smithen (Susan) and nephew Jon; his sister-in-law Randese (Serge) Leoni, their children, Hugh (Laura and their daughter) and Oliver (Hillary and their triplets); his ex-wife and good friend, Marcia Smithen Cohen, and good friends and former patients throughout the world. A private ceremony will be held Friday in Palm Beach. Shiva will take place Sunday (12 to 8pm) and Monday (2 to 8pm) at 310 Upper Mountain Ave., Montclair, NJ 07043.
