1929-2015. Elsie passed away peacefully at her home in New York City early Sunday morning, September 20, at the age of 86, after a courageous two year battle with cancer, surrounded by her loving family, including her children, grandchildren, and her devoted partner of more than 25 years, Stuart Herman. She is survived by her son, James Adler, and by her three daughters, Barbara Adler, Susan Chapman, Elizabeth Wertheimer, and by grandchildren, Sara Jane, Max, Harry, Cameron, Gideon, Ruby, Nicholas, and Helena. She is also survived by her sister, Louise Sommers, stepbrother, Ronald Levite, devoted nieces and nephews, and by Stuart's daughters Lisa and Helen, and grandchildren, Meredith, David, and Ivy. Elsie was born in Straubing, Germany, from where she escaped at the age of seven. She was radiantly intelligent, gentle, warm, and generous, with a mischievous sense of humor and a beautiful smile. She offered her love and support to all of her family and friends, to whom she was devoted. She gave generously to numerous charities and to Temple Emanu-El, where she sought to honor her grandparents, who perished in the Holocaust. Elsie cherished time spent with Stuart at their home in Naples, Florida. Elsie was very much loved as a mother, a grandmother, sister, partner to Stuart, and aunt. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to . Services will be on Monday, September 21, at 10:30am. At Temple Emanu-El, Fifth Avenue at 65th Street.
