My parents were friends of Julia and Seymour Gerstenhaber. I remember a life-size portrait Aaron did of his sister, Julia, which was displayed in their apartment. It was remarkable.

I was so saddened to read of Aaron's death. A wonderful person, a wonderful artist, a great loss.

My connection with your parents began when your mother and I worked together at the New-York Historical Society, 1975-1981. I headed a research project collecting and publishing the papers of Aaron Burr. We all remember your mother and father for their wit and gaiety and common sense and idealism. I remember your mother most vividly for her six-month career on a picket line of librarians. (My staff and I were excluded from the bargaining unit,so we couldn't join the union. We did, however, keep the strikers supplied with food.) Our best wishes to you and your families at this sad time.

I always loved looking at the large oil portrait of Robert Lehman that hung at the entrance to the Lehman Wing of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC. It is a wonderful painting done by Aaron Shikler.

Dearest Aaron, Throughout your illustrious career, and through personal sorrow and loss, you maintained your weekly teaching schedule together with David Levine. You would not let your students down.
I am sure that they will be devastated to know you are no longer able to be with them.
I'm thinking of you with love, always.
