Seymour Leichman Obituary

1933 - 2016
Seymour Leichman, 82 passed away April 10th, 2016 in Manhattan. Seymour received his MFA from Cooper Union and went on to be an accomplished artist, ad man, author/illustrator of children's books and teacher. As an artist, his favorite subject matters were the human form, landscapes and baseball (along with the occasional classic movie reference). Born in Brooklyn to Samuel and Helen Leichman, he lived on the Upper West Side, a day to day life that embodied New York values and lifestyle.

Always sharing his thoughts and skills, he taught throughout his career with stints at The Art Students League, Parsons, Jamaica School of Art and Pratt Institute. His work was exhibited at Kennedy Galleries, Vanderbilt University, David Gallery and Griffin Gallery. He painted murals for private collectors and the Ministry of Justice for the Government of Jamaica. His career in advertising included founding The Leichman Group and art directing at Ted Bates.

Seymour had a unique wit and intelligent humor which raised the mood of all around him.

He is survived by his son Samuel Leichman along with his sister Sandra Zanger, and seven nieces and nephews along with a grand niece and two grand nephews.

I mention Seymour in several of my poems. He was one truly beautiful soul.

I met Seymour on the streets of Manhattan in the mid 1980's. I was with my cousin Virginia and we were walking. We were young and pretty back then and Seymour just started walking in tandem with us. We all started laughing and talking as if we had known him always. We went to lunch together and he and Virginia remained friends for years. I didn't live in the city so I only saw him from time to time. Each visit was special, just like the man himself.

My deepest condolences,
Mark 5:39, liken death to sleep and that soon Jesus Christ is going to use his God given power to awaken them.

Mr. Leichman will be missed because he brought out in color and arrangement all the love of happiness in his heart by this work.
