WALLACE TURBEVILLE Obituary

TURBEVILLE--Wallace.

Wallace Clay Turbeville, 65, beloved husband and father and one of America's most respected advocates for economic justice, died in New York City on January 31, 2017 with his family by his side. Born in Nashville, Wally earned his undergraduate and law degrees at Vanderbilt University. After practicing law in New York and Boston, he embarked on a three- decade career in finance that included investment banking at Goldman Sachs. But in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis, Wally rededicated his life to reforming Wall Street and became an influential voice on financial reform. Wally was instrumental in creating the Dodd-Frank Act and his work during Detroit's bankruptcy crisis helped save municipal workers' pensions: he demonstrated that the city's insolvency was driven by a collapse of public revenue and bad municipal finance deals, not workers' benefits. As Senior Fellow at the think tank Demos, Wally published numerous articles on financial issues and contributed his expertise to The United Nations Environment Programme Inquiry into the Design of a Sustainable Financial System. Filming has recently begun for a new Harold Crooks film featuring Wally's life story and ideas titled "Implo$ion: The Rise of Finance and the Fall of Equality." Wally loved traveling, reading Rousseau, studying French, watching the Yankees, but coaching little league was probably his favorite hobby of all. Wally is survived by his wife Marianne Eggler; his daughter Kelsey Turbeville and son-in-law Peter Combs; his son Geoffrey Turbeville and Geoffrey's partner Ava Robinson; his stepson Maximilian Gerozissis; his brother and sister-in-law James and Jean Turbeville; his nieces Shannon Johnson and Keenan Daw and grandniece Kennedy Johnson. Memorial services are being held in New York and Nashville. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Southern Poverty Law Center and the ACLU.

Is it possible that this Wallace Turbeville would have visited Daytona Beach Florida around 1956-57? If so we stayed in the cabin next and became friends and I have many pictures of him and us on the beach

I am so sorry to learn of Wally's death. I was, across roles, a colleague and competitor and professional friend on Wall Street. He was an innovator and agent provocateur in the credit space. He will be missed.

Mr Turbeville gave civicly engaged Detroiters a sense of hope and validation about the manipulation of the Bankruptcy. He flew in from NYC to testify on behalf of the pensioners and Judge Rhodes never called on him! But he was there and ready! May God bless him and his loved ones! He was a good man and brilliant! <3 Ms. Dee
