DORIS CADOUX Obituary

CADOUX--Doris Gabbe.

Mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and beautiful spirit, Doris Gabbe Cadoux passed away peacefully in Hastings-on-Hudson, New York, on April 20, 2017. Born in Brooklyn, New York on June 6, 1920, Doris married her childhood friend Alexander Cadoux, now deceased, during the Second World War, when she served as a statistician in the Pentagon. Doris and Alex raised their family in Scarsdale, New York, where Doris became an ardent activist in a number of social and environmental causes, including the Jane Goodall Institute and Free the Children. Doris's strong sense of social justice led her to become active in the anti-Vietnam war effort and the presidential campaign of Eugene McCarthy. Doris went on to become New York State Chairman of Common Cause, and later was appointed by Governor Hugh Carey to be Deputy Commissioner of Agriculture for New York State. Doris also founded a nonprofit, Oceans Alert, to bring attention to the declining health of the world's oceans. She was an active board member of Stonyfield Yogurt, and helped guide critical decisions that were ultimately crucial to the company's success. Doris was a true family matriarch, revered and adored by her large family. She is survived by her loving partner, Hal Schwartz, and her four children: Alexander Cadoux, Claude Cadoux, Robert Cadoux, and Margaret Cadoux Hirshberg, and their spouses Lisa Cadoux, Cathleen Cadoux, Louise Cadoux, and Gary Hirshberg. She was also treasured by her step- children, Jonathan Schwartz and Jill Schwartz. She leaves behind ten devoted grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Born during an era when horse-drawn wagons sold blocks of ice for home iceboxes in the streets of Brooklyn, Doris embraced the rapid changes that occurred during her lifetime and was always delighted by the new. She was an intrepid traveler, calm and steady in a crisis, but was most celebrated for her ability to listen deeply and patiently and respond wisely to all who sought her counsel. Doris wrapped her family and many friends in a rare kind of pure love without judgment, and their powerful and undying dedication to her will always be a testament to how deeply they felt that love. A memorial service will be held for Doris later this spring. In lieu of flowers, please give a donation to the Jane Goodall Institute or a charity of your choice.

My husband, Cliff, also now passed on, and I sailed with Doris and Hal on the Fall 2008 Semester at Sea voyage. We were all Lifelong Learners. Doris was such an inspiration to young and old alike on the ship. She was a beautiful soul and loved by all of us who knew her. Please accept my deepest condolences.

Dearest Bob, Meg (and Gary) and Hall - As did many SVNers, I adored Doris as a "second Mom" and sought her counsel and support for many years. She and Hal came to our second daughter's bat-mitzvah, and showed up in every way whenever called. For part of my life, my "secret" ancestors and the challenges there in were only known by her (not even my wife of 40 years knew at the time), and again, her counsel, warmth, and love embraced me. She is missed, of course, but is with so many of us in her fight for social and environmental justice every day of our lives.

Dearest Meg, Bob, Claude and Alex. I was so sorry to learn of Doris's passing, I cannot tell you how often I think of you all and thought of her. Doris was an accomplished, brilliant woman, but to me she always remained an anchor, a living connection to my parents, and my past. to our childhood. Though I did not visit, I thought of her often. I regret that I did not share this fact with her, and that I had not seen her for years. She will remain in my heart always. Please let me know of your plans for the memorial service as I would very much like to attend. Sending love and support for you all. Love, Stefanie

Dear Alex, Claude, Bob and Meg,
I have thought of Doris so many times over the last several years. I kept meaning to plan a visit.

Your family has remained a part of mine, in heart and memory. It always had a certain force of nature feel to it. And several matriarchs. Doris accomplished so much during the time I was growing up and much again after we lost touch. What a wonder.

I am sending healing thoughts to all of you who are frozen at a certain time in my mind.

Please let me know your plans for a memorial service. I would surely try to come.
Fondly, Jehed

I didn't even know her but now having read her story I so wish I had had the chance. And I know her by proxy through her extraordinary daughter who she filled to the brim with kindness, love and wisdom.

I am so sorry for the family's loss. May you find comfort through prayer and God's loving promise found at John 6:40.

My thoughts are with the family during this difficult time. I hope that the promise in 1 Thessalonians 4:14 can bring comfort. Knowing that there is a hope for our love ones lost in death can be reassuring.
