HARRIET WINGREEN Obituary
The New York Philharmonic mourns the passing, on August 26, of former Philharmonic piano/celesta player Harriet Wingreen, first hired by Leonard Bernstein in 1965. For almost 50 years she made vital contributions through her performances in orchestral and chamber music concerts and her accompaniment of solo rehearsals and auditions. We will miss Harriet's warmth, humor, and intelligence, and extend deepest condolences to her family, including her son, daughter-in-law, and two grandsons.

I was introduced to Harriet by no less than Van Cliburn, after one of his concerts in the late 1960s. Like Van, Harriet was gracious and welcoming to the very young concertgoer that I was becoming, having studied with teachers who encouraged me to not only practice diligently, but to attend as many performances as possible. Harriet and Van both were kind and nurturing souls, and helped perpetuate the abiding love I have for great music -- and the spiritual nourishment it provides -- to this day!
