JANET HITCHCOCK Obituary

HITCHCOCK--Janet

Cox-Rearick, eminent art historian, died Tuesday, November 27, 2018. Professor of Art History at Hunter College, 1964-2000, and Distinguished Professor at the Graduate Center, CUNY, 2000-2006, she was a specialist in Italian Renaissance Art. She received many awards and fellowships and was both a fellow and a visiting professor at Villa I Tatti, the Harvard Center for Italian Renaissance Studies in Florence, Italy. Born in Bronxville, NY, on June 28, 1930, she was the daughter of Mary and Vernon Cox. She was married to H. Wiley Hitchcock from 1965 until his death in 2007. She was also married to William R. Rearick and Louis A. Waldman. She is survived by her sister, Cynthia Farris; her nephews, Michael, Stephen, and Peter Aron; and her stepchildren, Susan and Hugh Hitchcock. A gracious and elegant New Yorker, Cox-Rearick published numerous books and articles, including Dynasty and Destiny in Medici Art (1984) and The Collection of Francis I (1995). In 2010, she curated an exhibit of Bronzino's drawings at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Gifts in her memory can go to Villa I Tatti, 124 Mt. Auburn St., Cambridge, MA 02138.
