DAVID BEITZEL Obituary

BEITZEL--David. passed away of cardiac arrest caused by an aortic dissection on January 20, 2019. After working for Sperone Westwater Gallery, he opened the David Beitzel Gallery on Prince Street in 1986, when SoHo was emerging as the new art center in New York City. He represented a diversity of artists including Dawoud Bey, Radcliffe Bailey, Leslie Saar, Sam Messer, Squeak Carnwath and others. In 2001 he closed the gallery and opened Beitzel Fine Arts, working with private collectors, institutions, and corporations. David was born in Philadelphia before the family moved to Chappaqua for its proximity to Armonk, headquarters of IBM, where David's father, Spike Beitzel, was a senior vice president and on the Board of Directors. David is survived by his partner of 26 years, Darren Walker, president of the Ford Foundation; his mother Mary Lou; sister, Tish Vredenburgh and her husband Bob; brother, Skip Beitzel and his wife, Michaela; five nephews and a niece. He graduated from Horace Greeley High School and the University of Vermont, and received an MFA in painting from Bennington College. David was deeply passionate about art and LGBT causes. He served on the boards of Bennington College; the Hetrick-Martin Institute; In the Life, a pioneering public television series on LGBT issues; The Fleming Museum of Art at the University of Vermont; and the Skowhegan School of Art and Painting. There will be a private family ceremony on January 26th and a memorial in New York City on David's birthday, February 23rd. Donations in his memory may be made to Hetrick Martin Institute or the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture.

My deepest condolences to the family. I just found out about David's passing from an old friend that saw this memorial and remembered when I took her to an event at the gallery.

I met David in the late 90's when I was the office manager of the leasing & property management company of his gallery on Prince. He was always kind and respectful. I admired his prescence. From the moment you'd see him, looking very clean cut and professional, you knew he owned the gallery. He cared a lot about his space and the artists he represented. I had the privilage of seeing some amazing growth of the gallery and some amazing talent come out of there.

It was a privilage to know him and wanted those who knew him to know that he meant something to even someone like me, who met him for a fleeting moment.

Thank you,
Paul Piedrahita

I miss David. To this day I am reminded of his true commitment to painting and to the artists he represented. He was my dealer for 14 years. Something unheard of these days. At times I hear myself asking, "what would David suggest?" as I navigate my way these days.

Dear Darren and David's family members, I knew David at Bennington College where he received his masters degree in a tiny program that was very special to that arts department and I believe also to those who went there. I think he graduated in 1981-2 with a masters degree. He was always friendly and open to all. He strode into the contemporary NYC art world as a part of a generation of ambitious young men, including Matthew Marks and Jack Bankowsky, who also went through the program. What really struck me was that this group did not become artists, but two dealers and one writer/editor of Artforum. There was this microcosm of art appreciators that Bennington helped to spawn. Back in NYC, we both ended up in soho - he started his gallery and I was living on Charlton Street in 1989, west of Soho. I would stop by the gallery (walking back and forth on Prince Street) about once a month to see the exhibitions of his artists. He was always nice to me and thoughtful. It seemed he never took on the blasé attitude of the 'dealer'. He was receptive and honest and he hired the best people to work with him. They worked with him, it seemed, not 'for' him. David's gallery was solidly on the side of the contemporary art world in soho that had 'vision' and a less commercial bent, and alongside him others I loved to visit: Annie Plumb was just down the block, Editions Schellmann had a tucked away loft, where my friend Meg worked (she is now running Sikkema/Jenkins), Joe Fawbush was showing Kiki Smith for the first time and Colin Deland and his American Fine Arts had just started the Armory show, and my employer Ed Thorp...the list goes on and on. These dealers were not SOHO royalty (Castelli, OK Harris, Ivan Karp etc). They expanded what soho had to offer. I think about David a lot, he was truly appreciated by many, I miss him and his laugh. It is very simple, he is missed by many.

He was a an art student In my class. A smart, interesting young painter struggling conceptually to find his personal voice. An intellectual and painterly rebel who found himself representing other artists, with the vigor and conviction he always had for his beliefs. He probably never knew that I really respected his early work and him, although we had stayed in touch spanning many platforms, many years. And...%}#}%}%{} I'm really sad and mad to hear the news about this tragic loss. with ❤.
