Seymour Friedman Obituary

FRIEDMAN—Seymour, (Honorable). A former attorney and judge, died of complications from ALS on Tuesday in West Palm Beach, Florida. He was 82 years old. Mr. Friedman practiced law for over 50 years in New York, California, and Florida. Sy Friedman spearheaded a number of voting rights cases including Rosario v. Rockefeller, which resulted in the US Supreme Court decision that abolished restrictions on voter registration. Sy Friedman was also a respected legal visionary. He was an early champion of allowing cameras in the courtroom and permitting jurors to take notes during proceedings. As a jurist, he became nationally known for his decision recognizing the rights of pet owners in Corso v. Crawford Dog and Cat Hospital. The case has been cited as a landmark decision in acknowledging the value of pet ownership. A Renaissance man at heart, his achievements were many. In college, Sy was a star player on the CCNY nationally ranked basketball team. He was also an ordained cantor, TV commentator, and a member of Mensa. He was a unique and talented individual who had an insatiable zest for life and his family feels incredibly fortunate to have had his love and guidance throughout the years. He is survived by his devoted wife Elaine, sons Mitchell and Matthew, daughter Barbara, and grandchildren Rachel and Andrew Citron.

Grandpa,

I never got to meet you, I wish I did. I will do the ice bucket challenge in honor of you every year. I would have played sports with you as much as I could. Wish you could see me during my games/sports I think and hope you would be proud of me. My Daddy your son would tell my stories about you and what you were like. I would love them. He cary's on your legacy. He misses you so much so much and I do to. I am 9 years old right now my birthday is soon. I will think of you on that day. I hope what my dad said I hope have all those qualities. I love you so much and Grandma Elaine does to. Even tough it is a little early Happy Birthday. Hope all your wishes come true.

Love,
Sydney (your Granddaughter)

Dad,

It is 10 years this week since you passed and I still miss you. I think about you all the time. The funniest and most lively guy I ever knew.

A lot has happened in the last 10 years. Sydney is now 8 and have another wonderful little girl Jordan, who is 5. You would love them. I just wish you could have met.

Your son,
Matt

Dad,

It has been a year and a half since you passed and I still think of you everyday. I want you to know that there is someone else that has you in her heart and soul. On March 25, 2008 Lauren and I welcomed the new addition of Sydney Belle Friedman to the world. She has your "S", your eyes and hopefully will develop your sense of humor. Your legacy lives on through her.

Dad, you passed away 6 months ago today and I miss you as much as ever. I think about you every single day. Mommy does too. Probably everyone who knew you does too. I love you so much.

Your son,
Matt
