BUTTERWORTH, Ruth Helen CNZM. Died peacefully at Auckland Hospital, 29 January 2020, in her 87th year. Teacher, mentor, friend to so many. At Ruth's request, she has been privately cremated. A celebration of Ruth's life will be held 2.00pm, Tuesday 11 February at the Stamford Plaza Hotel. Messages can be sent to Apartment G05, Turing Building, 2 Ariki St, Grey Lynn, Auckland 1021. Ruth was the first senior women academic I met during my undergraduate days in the Pol Studies Dept. In fact, she was probably the only senior woman academic in the Dept during my MA days as well ... and for some time afterwards! I only took one class with her but she was always there for advice, and to be something of a role model even after I left the Dept. I remember her as feisty and straightforward, and not fearful of offending anyone who she thought needed to be set straight! Academe needs more Ruth Butterworths! Rest peacefully.
