Dirk's enthusiasm for and appreciation of urban design was highlighted during his time with the Planning School at Auckland University highlighted by his personal enthusiasm for the Lippencott-Griffin clock tower building on campus.

He and I overlapped as colleages in the Planning School for only two or three years around the mid-1980s: a period marked by a successful Doctoral completion, submission and examination.

Dirk's next assignment was with the Fiji Housing authority then, I believe, back to Europe.
