Alice Mae Powell died on the evening of Friday, January 4, 2019 at Palm Garden Health and Rehabilitation Center in Ocala, FL, at the age of 95. Ms. Powell was born on July 20, 1923 in Dunnellon, FL to the late Minne (Simpson) McCall and the late William Powell, Sr. She graduated from the Hard Rock High School in Dunnellon, and she attended cosmetology school in Philadelphia, PA.
Alice was highly respected and well-loved by many, and she was very generous with her time and resources. An employee of the City of Dunnellon for several decades, she was known by most people through her many years as a substitute teacher at Booker T. Washington High School. She was a faithful member of Mt. Olive A.M.E. Church throughout her life.
Ms. Powell is survived by her brother, Mr. William Powell, Jr. of Americus GA; nieces and nephews, Vanessa Powell of Americus, GA, William C. Powell (Rosephanye) of Auburn, AL, John ('Skip') Powell, Jr., and Adele Powell of Detroil, MI; and several great-nieces and nephews, great-great nieces and nephews and cousins also survives; a god-sister, Mary Jane Johnson; devoted family members and friends, Lynne and Ron McAndrew, Robert Earl McIntyre; and neighbor, Peter Washington.
She is preceded in death by her father, William Powell, Sr.; her mother, Minnie (Simpson) McCall; and her brother, John Powell of Detroit, MI; grandparents, John and Sarah Williams; and uncle, Steve Earle.
The funeral will take place on Saturday, January 12, 2019 at 1:00 pm. Ms. Powell will be buried at Dunnellon Community Cemetery immediately following the funeral service. In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to Mount Olive A.M.E Church.
