GEORGE SAMUEL COPE Obituary
COPE, GEORGE SAMUEL
George Samuel Cope, 89, entered God's heavenly kingdom on Saturday, January 5, 2019. He was born at home in Inverness, Alabama on October 13, 1929. In his youth, George played lots of baseball, attended a nearby small country school, fished in the local creeks, hunted squirrels with his sling shot, played marbles in the sand in front of his father's country store, and graduated from high school with eight classmates.
George attended Troy State Teaching College obtaining his bachelor's degree and then joined the Army during the Korean War. After his discharge, he worked at Bonnie Plant Farm in Union Springs, Alabama and attended Auburn University where he received his masters degree. While attending Auburn, he met the lovely Barbara Wamp from Cullman, Alabama. They were married in December of 1954. In the spring of 1955, they drove south through Central Florida stopping to apply for teaching positions at schools along the way. He stopped at the Weirsdale school where the principal, Leo Armstrong, offered them jobs at the brand new Lake Weir High School in Sunset Harbor. They rented a home on the south shore of Lake Weir for $60/month and were convinced they had found paradise!!
George taught math at Lake Weir High School until retiring in 1991. He took his job seriously and was known for being a teacher that challenged his students to progress academically and socially. His reputation at LWHS as a firm but fair man was LEGENDARY!!!
In his spare time, he trained bird dogs, hunted quail, grew gardens, enjoyed bee keeping, built a glass bee hive that hung over their TV, coached baseball, was a director at Camp Kiwanis, attended most LWHS sporting events, and was very proud of his beautiful yard and landscaping. Meanwhile, George and Barbara raised four children that all went on to gain Bachelor's degrees.
He is survived by a son, David Cope (Laurie) from Ocala; daughters, Kelly Petrash (Mark) from Denver, Robin Knupp (David) from Asheville, and Landra Tedstrom (Eric) on mission in Thailand. He also has nine grandchildren, Dalton and Marquesa Cope, Kenan, Carson, and Davis Petrash, and Bowen, Kyla, Brenna, and Cooper Tedstrom.
A memorial service will be at 3:00 on Saturday afternoon January 19, 2019 at the Weirsdale Presbyterian Church located at 16303 SE 137th Court. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to the .
