JAY CARTER Obituary

CARTER, JAY DEE
Jay Dee Carter of Ocala, FL passed away on June 21, 2017 at Hospice of Marion County in Ocala, FL. He was born on January 15, 1942 in Danville, IL, the first son of James D. and Helena Riggs Carter.
He is survived by his wife of almost 54 years, Peggy (Hall) Carter, son Michael J. Carter (Jessica) and daughter Jayne A. Carter all of Ocala, FL. Grandchildren Jacob Fantauzzi (20), Columbus, MS, Jayda Fantauzzi (19) Ocala, FL and Jay H. Carter (9) Ocala, FL; brothers Phillip L. Carter (Sue) of Tempe, AZ, and William D. Carter (Susan) of Mission Hills, KS, brother-in-law Judge Charles C. Hall (Kim) of Danville, IL, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Jay was preceded in death by his parents James D. and Helena Riggs Carter, brother Jeremy D. Carter, and in-laws Lloyd E. 'Red' and Jeanette Myers Hall.
Jay was raised in Covington, Indiana and graduated from Covington High School in 1960. He attended Butler University and after college, worked in the banking and finance industry in both Indiana and Michigan for many years before moving back to his hometown of Covington to start Western Indiana Manufactured Homes. In the early 90's Jay moved to Florida and started Master Garage Builders, Inc. with his son Michael. He and Mike worked hand in hand for over 20 years until his illness, something they both enjoyed immensely.
Jay was a Freemason, member of the Scottish Rite, an NRA Lifetime Member, volunteer fireman, and a member of Ducks Unlimited, the Amateur Trapshooting Association and the Coastal Conservation Association of Florida.
Jay was a true outdoorsman who particularly enjoyed duck and pheasant hunting in his home state of Indiana with his friends. He was an avid trap shooter and participated in many sporting clay events throughout the Midwest. After moving to Florida he developed a passion for saltwater fishing. He loved to spend a day on the Gulf fishing with his son and grandson or pier fishing from the Sunshine Skyway with his wife and daughter. In his spare time he could be found reading, watching IU basketball, or New York Yankee games. He was especially happy that he was able to attend all of his grandson Jay's baseball games this spring.
Per his wishes and in lieu of a service, a family celebration of his life will be conducted in his honor. Jay was a loving Husband, Dad, Grampy, Brother, Uncle and Cousin who will be deeply missed by his family.
Contributions can be made to The Leukemia And Lymphoma Society or Legacy House Hospice of Marion County.

Peggy, I have been trying to reach you ever since Jay's Obituary was in the paper. I have been unable to reach Charlie for a phone number for you. I tried a number today the operator gave me and left a message. Please call me as I would love to talk with you. I cannot imagine how you must be missing your dear man. Think how blessed you have been to have found someone who thought you walked on water. Please accept our condolences. Patsy and Lynn Sparks
