Richard Garrett Hughes

With a nice visit planned and his favorite dinner cooking, we learned of the passing of our much loved son, Richard Garrett Hughes, 23, of New Franklin, Ohio.

Garrett, forever a comet, graduated from Coventry High School, class of 2011. He had recently graduated from Akron Weld and Testing Laboratory and was looking forward to a career in the welding field. His interests growing up included Cub Scouting, video gaming and all sports especially baseball. He was thrilling to watch, and in general thrilling to raise. He always made us proud, and we loved him deeply

Thrills, however, are what eventually took him from us. He died from a suspected accidental drug overdose on March 17, following his cousin Andreas, 21 who passed in the same manner just eighteen days before. Together in life and death, these boys will forever be loved and missed. Our hearts are broken.

Garrett was preceded in death by his grandparents, Richard G. Hughes, Carol A. Douglas, James T. and Marjorie Harris; cousins, Andreas Diamantopoulis and Mark Aishton.

Survivors include parents, Richard W. and Jacqueline M. Hughes; grandmother, Sharon Hughes; uncles, Greg (Shirley) and Mark (Jill) Hughes; aunts, Jenny (Stuart) Smith and Dawn (Paul) Davet, Marilyn (Tom) Aishton, and Patty Harris; and many cousins and great friends including, Alex Tackett, Michael Groff and Michael Morris.

Our special thanks to the Tackett family for their help and support.

Funeral Service will be Tuesday, March 22 at 7 p.m. at House of Eberhardt Funeral Home, 472 W. Turkeyfoot Lake Rd. (Rt. 619) Portage Lakes. Family and friends will be received from 4 p.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home. Garrett loved his dogs, Bandit and Roxie.

In lieu of flowers, if so desired, memorial contributions may be made to the Greater Akron Humane Society.

Rick and Jackie,
I just found about Garrett and my heart sank in my chest. I remember so many wonderful times our boys spent in scouts and admired Rick for all his time he put into it. I cannot imagine what you must be going through. May God's peace that passes all human understanding surround you and keep you close as you mourn the loss of this beautiful young man.

Rick and Jackie, I am so sorry to hear of Garrett's passing. My heart breaks for both of you. I have so many memories of him as a sweet little boy and it was great to see him last year when he visited. As a very young mother (when our boys were little), I admired and looked up to both of you! You provided Garrett with all of the love and support that you had. Although your heart will not be whole, I hope that you can find joy in your cherished memories.

We read your son's obituary over the weekend and are so saddened for your entire family. We lost our daughter on March 18, 2015 from a heroin overdose. To the parents of Richard Garret Hughes:

I've never met you, but I've been thinking about you all day. I like to read through the newspaper in the mornings, and now and then I come across something extraordinary. Your obituary for your son is as powerful as it is elegantly written. My heart goes out to you, for your grief and extreme pain is evident on the page; I certainly felt it while reading what you wrote about your son, and I am still feeling it. I can only imagine what you are going through right now. Please know that you and your family have my deepest sympathy and heartfelt prayers! Today is in fact my birthday; if I still get a birthday wish, I wish that you find comfort and peace (and even eventually joy again!), and that you know without any doubt that Garret's life -while far, far too brief- has served a purpose. It is, most likely, impossible to see the full extent of that purpose right now, but I, a complete stranger (who never does anything like this!) was moved enough to reach out to you because of him. So that is, I think, a definite, positive start! God bless you & be with you in this very difficult time!!!
