Walter Blackie, 92, passed away September 10, 2018.

He was born July 20, 1926 in Akron to the late Walter P. and Nettie Iva Blackie. Walter attend East High School, served his country in the U.S. Army 8th Calvary in Japan and the Philippines during WWII. He was a past member of St. Paul's and St Andrew's Episcopal Church, was instrumental in starting St Michael's Episcopal Church in Uniontown and a member of New Life Episcopal Church. Walter retired from IBEW Local 306.

Along with his parents, Walter was preceded in death by his son, Thomas Blackie; granddaughter, Sharon Kehl; great-granddaughter, Sophia Polacheck; son-in-law, Larry Strouble; and sister, Edna Wroe. He is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Anna, whom he met while roller skating; sons, David and Gary Blackie; daughters,

Pamela Strouble and Marlene (Don) Polacheck; grandchildren, Denise (Matthew), Lisa (Rick), Jennifer (Chad), Christopher (Karyn), Kristina, Lanier,

McKinley, Gregory,

Grayson, Josh and Gianna; six great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Cathy Blackie-Glassner; as well as many other family and friends.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, September 15, 2018 at the Schermesser Funeral Home, 600 E. Turkeyfoot Lake Road, Akron, Ohio 44319 (SR 619) with Pastor Joel Cochran officiating. Family and friends may call on Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Walter's name to Meals On Wheels of Stark and Wayne Counties, 2363 Nave Road SE, Massillon Ohio 44646 or to Crossroads Hospice, Charitable Foundation 3743 Boettler Oaks Drive, STE E, Uniontown Ohio 44685.
