"Big Joe" Burrell

Mr. Joseph Henry "Big Joe" Burrell, 80, passed away Feb. 2, 2005, at the Fletcher Allen Hospital in Burlington, Vt.

He was born Feb. 9, 1924, to Robert and Pearl Burrell of Port Huron, Mich. He attended the public schools there. He served his country during World War II in Africa, Italy, and the Philippines. The great love of his life was playing and mastering his musical instruments. He was known internationally for his musical genius as a saxophonist, play ing with Big Band legends such as Count Basie, B.B. King, and others, and lastly with Big Joe and the Unknown Blues Band.

He was loved and respected for his great talent. He was a member of the Prince of Peace Baptist Church, where his brother, Rev. Dr. John Milton Burrell, is Founder Pastor.

Preceded in death by his fa ther and mother, Robert and Pearl Burrell; brothers; Leo An derson, Robert R. and James Burrell; sisters, Pauline (Herman) Bell, Effie (Robert V.) Lewis, he is survived by wife, Odelia; brother, Rev. Dr. John Milton (Doris) Burrell; stepdaughter, Diana Belton; stepson, Ronald Belton; stepgrand son, Larry Belton Jr.; nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends.

Memorial services will be held Friday, Feb. 11, 2005, at 1 p.m., at Prince of Peace Baptist Church, 844 Garth Ave., Akron, Ohio, the Rev. Dr. John Milton Burrell officiating.
