Today is the seventh anniversary of the death of Richard Neal, who was one of the most evolved human beings I have ever known. I first met him when I was 17 and enrolled in the Neighborhood Youth Corps in 1965, which he headed at the time. I admired him greatly for his prodigious emotional intelligence, as well as his wisdom and understanding. He was a great role model for me, at a time when I greatly needed someone to look up to. I have written about his influence on me today on Facebook. May he Rest in Peace.

hello family of Richard Neal, I worked for Mr. Neal in 1970 for only two weeks while I was a student at Akron U. I remember so well that it was Earth Day and his birthday. He is someone I remember fondly. His kindness and understanding of life. He posted wonderful messages of hope, love and justice. I admired him. I am currently visiting in Akron and thought of him because of the date. My curiosity to find out if he was still in town led me to a search on the internet to which I was sad to see he had passes away. What a wonderful man with a smile within and without. I have always remembered him fondly and willcontinue to do so. He touched my heart at an early age and I am grateful to have had the opportunity to have known him. Janet (wigand) Strock, Albany, NY

I was fortunate to have Richard cross my path in life in North Akron and in working in city recreation. There was just something so special about him and he demonstrated such special class and charisma. He served well in so many ways. A true gentleman.

To the family of Richard Neal. My name is Dr. Ted Curtis and I was a classmate of Richard's and played football and basketball with Richard at Jennings Junior High and North High. I recently spoke with Richard at Jim Sibley's calling hours.

In addition to Richard being an extraordinary athlete he was a wonderful person, a gentleman and someone who enjoyed people.

I was at the calling hours on Friday, June 28, 2013. I hope you all are doing well.

Mr. Neal was such a wonderful man. My mother, Tillie Kopcha, worked for him at the University of Akron and he was such a kind and caring boss. Even after my Mom retired from Akron U. Mr. Neal would visit them, call them on the phone and make sure they were doing well. I remember one time when he learned my parents were upset with the new car they had purchased. Mr. Neal went with them to the car dealer to get the problem straightened out. That's the kind of man he was. The world has lost a good, Christian role model who will be hard to replace.

My thoughts and prayers go out to his family. Remember that Richard Neal is in a better place and looking down on all of you with love. God bless you all!

To the Entire Neal Family,
The Lord is my light and my salvation, Whom shall I fear, The Lord is the strength of my life, of whom shall I be afraid.
Thinking of you Mr. Neal, takes me back...to my childhood days in Elizabeth Park and much later at Akron U. (when you were my boss on campus). It seems like it was just yesterday, we were all so young and impressionable. I can remember how you taught me the correct way to shake hands. How could I have known the indelible impression you would make on my life. And.., when I graduated you gave me (7)brand new suits and sent me on interviews. I am so glad I saw you in November and shared how much I respect and appreciate you (and you kept crying), you were such an inspiration. Mr. Neal you were a second dad to me when I loss my own. Love U Always

To my friend Richard,Jr and family,

Your Father was truly a good man and mentor. I remember how he would talk and encourage us to take the best classes in high school to prepare us for college. He also kept it real. Thank you Mr. Neal for your guidance and your help when I entered the search for employment because of you and not only me you helped us become and expected the best when we became To the University of Akron as employees. What a lovely man he was. My mother was his secretary at UA many, many years ago. He stayed in touch with the family - coming to my father's 90th birthday party almost 5 years ago. He was one of the kindest, caring men I had the fortune to meet and know. I saw him last year at a retirement party and we caught up on some stories. I know he will be greatly missed by his family and the community.

To my family,
Uncle Richard was certainly one of the great men in the family. He loved fun and family, he made it a point to drop by all family functions if only to say hi and to show that he remembered.
Destini could spot his car a block away and will argue you down if you told her that it wasn't Uncle Richard. Destini and him had their own way of communicating with each other a simple wave!!
I am so glad that she got the opportunity to have that final wave with her great uncle and that he knew she was there to say she loved him.
We will truly miss you and take comfort in knowing that you are no longer in pain.

Luv you always

I wish we could have "The Esquires" baseball team reunion from 1961, Elizabeth Park, I was fortunate to have Coach Neal, as a white kid, who treated me like his own son. What a great team, taught me about diversity, at a young age, although I grew up at South Akron St Mary, the bigger picture was traveling as a TEAM, and how , in some places I was made fun of. It only made me stronger for my team mates as a Team , and what Mr Neal explained to me, about life...I carry this with me, and exercise it , God Bless. My Elizabeth Park days were just like a movie about baseball, and growing up united.

To the Neal Family: "Special" does not begin to describe the man I came to know and admire at Akron University in the late 1970's. Mr. Neal was a caring, and charismatic role model for many students who did not have that "father" figure to help figure things out towards the development of adulthood... I will never forget his calm voice and caring heart. God Bless you family, and know that you now have an Angel in training...

To the Family of Richard Neal Sr.:

We the Brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity mourn the loss of our dear departed brother, Richard Neal Sr., offer our sincere condolences, and share in your grief of his death.

Grief is the normal and natural reaction to significant emotional loss of any kind. Grief is the conflicting feelings caused by the end of, or change in, a familiar pattern of behavior. Grief is the feeling of reaching out for someone who has always been there, only to find when you need them again, they are no longer there. Grief is unique to each individual and to each and every relationship.

Therefore, we cannot say we know how you feel. We can only imagine how you feel based on a similar loss of ours. What we can say is that we share in your love for Richard and that we pray for the love and comfort that only God can provide you during this bereavement period.
