John is survived by Ann, his wife of 28 years; daughter, Dorothy (Dome) Cameron; son, John Alexander of Reston, Va.; granddaughters, Ashley and Alahna; sister, Elaine (Bob) Walters; and nephew, John.

John was born in Warren, Ohio on July 12, 1948 to Agnes (Kazimer) and John Hanchulak and was baptized into the Catholic Faith at St. Mary Catholic church. He attended St. Mary grade school and John F. Kennedy High School, graduating in 1966. He attended Carnegie Mellon University, graduating with a Bachelor's Degree in Design.

He taught one year in the Warren Public School system, then joined the ad agency Sherman and Associates, as a graphic designer. While in Warren, he was especially involved with the Trumbull Art Guild, helping the gallery grow with monthly events and shows promoting local artists.

John then moved to Akron to join Hesselbart & Mitten/Arocom Inc., becoming Executive Art Director after a five-year stay. In 1978, John formed Smiley/Hanchulak Design, Inc. with partner Doug Smiley, and built the firm into a regional sales promotion, public relations, and advertising firm with national and international clients such as American Greetings, Genie, TDK Electronics Corporation, General Electric, Parker Hannifin, Evenflo, and large regional firms such as Smith Dairy in Orrville. John was a parishioner of St. Hilary Roman Catholic Church and was a resident of Fairlawn Heights since 1990.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 9:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Hilary Church, 2750 W. Market St. There will be no calling hours. John will be interred at St. Michael's Cemetery in Newton Falls, Ohio next to his parents and grandparents. Dear Ann and Dorothy,

I am so sorry for yet another loss for you. I believe we gain a special strength when we lose loved ones in a short timeframe.
I pray that you are comforted by your memories and God's promise. You are not alone. We are together in this journey, as friends and as His children.

I got to know John during my days at A-T. He had such a big heart and gentle manner. He even gave me an antique drawing board, which I still use. I will always remember the great parties at John and Ann's home, and the evening we played euchre until almost daylight! My sympathies to Ann and the children - you are in my prayers that God will give you comfort and ease your loss by filling you with many great memories and the knowledge that John is in His arms. My deepest sympathy to John's family. I got to know John when I was on the staff at St. Hilary's. He helped me with the design and completion of a number of significant liturgical programs. He was always so kind and positive. During his recent illness, I was impressed with his continued commitment to serving as a Eucharistic minister on Sunday mornings. He will be missed.
