Rosemary Shattuck, 89, passed away peacefully on Aug. 22, 2006, after a period of declining health.
She was born in Cincinnati and moved to Akron as a child. She had fond memories of summer visits back to Cincinnati to visit her aunts and uncles. She graduated from West High School, attended business school in Akron, and was employed by Goodyear Aerospace. During World War II she joined the Waves and was assigned to Jacksonville Naval Station, Fla., where she was secretary to the admiral. She returned to Akron to marry George Shattuck, and they settled in Cuyahoga Falls to raise their two daughters. In later years, Rosemary spent winters in Ft. Myers, Fla., but returned to live at Stow Glen Retirement Village in 1999.
Rosemary enjoyed gardening and was an active member of the Oak Park Garden Club for many years. In addition, she was a Girl Scout leader and a Red Cross Blood Bank volunteer. She sewed for herself and her daughters and did beautiful decoupage, oil painting, stained glass, millinery, flower arranging, and decorating her home. Interesting travel and the study of astrology were passions to which she dedicated her time as well.
She was predeceased by husband, George; grandson, Christopher; and son-in-law, Gary Nixon. She was very proud of her family who survives her, daughters and son-in-law, Carol and Gary Eiber of Silver Lake, Sherri Nixon of Exeter, N.H.; grandchildren, Jeff Eiber, Theresa Carey and husband, Mike; great-grandson, Garrett Carey; stepgranddaughters, Kris Kinsell-Nixon and Kara Kinsell-Nixon; and several nieces and nephews throughout the country.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 2, in the chapel at Stow Glen Retirement Village, with Rev. Stephen Gehlert officiating. A reception will follow in the Birch Hall Community Room. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Visiting Nurse Service at 3358 Ridgewood Rd., Akron 44333; the Alzheimer's Association at 1815 W. Market St. Suite 301, Akron 44313; the Salvation Army at 190 S. Maple St., Akron 44203; or a charitable cause of your choosing. (REDMON, STOW, 330-688-6631.)
