OLEAN - Richard W. Say, of 1004 Vine St., passed away peacefully Friday (Sept. 14, 2018) in his home, in the loving presence of his family.
Born Nov. 18, 1940, in Olean he was the son of Delton Say and Helen Williams Say Pickard. On Oct. 7, 1972, in Obi, he married Sylvia Kisel, who survives.
Richard was a graduate of Olean High School, Class of 1958, and first began employment in sales. For over 15 years he worked for the former MDS Lab in Olean, later Quest Diagnostics Corp. as a medical courier.
Richard enjoyed politics and served as an alderman for the city of Olean as well as made an unsuccessful bid for mayor. He certainly enjoyed talking about the politics of the day and was the voice and face of a local television program called "News and Views."
Years ago he was part of an organization known as the "Hawks." The group enjoyed making and flying to-scale model airplanes. They later joined with the current STARS Club and Richard stayed active for many years with this hobby. He employed his engineering talent and started a business called "Aero Plans and Parts" where he created and sold plans around the world.
He was a history buff and had a keen interest in learning war strategies, especially of WW II. In more recent years he developed woodworking skills and used his talent to make cabinets and furniture for his home.
He was loved deeply and will be missed profoundly by his wife Sylvia of 46 years; and his four children, Ellen (Jeffrey) Herner of Portville, Laura (Tod) Baker of Tecumseh, Mich., Jason Say of Olean and Pamela Say of Glenwood; his five grandchildren, Richard Herner, Cheyenne Herner, Jacob Baker, Kendrah Baker and Amelia Witter, will also forever miss him.
Sylvia and her children welcome family and friends to her home for visiting from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday (Sept. 22, 2018). Light refreshments will be served throughout the day. At 11:30 a.m., there will be a blessing that will be offered in acknowledgement of the gift of Richard's life.
Memorials, if desired, may be made to Homecare & Hospice, 1225 W. State St., Olean, NY 14760.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home, Olean. Online condolences may be expressed at oleanfuneralhome.com.

It´s so hard to believe that it´s been 5 years already since we lost you. You are in my thoughts each and every day. I miss our spirited talks about politics, religion, freedom, and anything we can think of. I miss your voice, your wit and wisdom. You were my blue-print growing up and showed me what love looks like. I miss you, Dad. Until we meet again.

Grandpa, I miss you. I'll miss our conversations about politics and guns and just hearing you speak. I had very high regards to you wisdom and opinions. I'll miss hearing your unexpected exclamations around family dinners during the holidays, that which brought laughter to the whole room. I love you grandpa, until we talk again. ~Rich

I have so many wonderful memories of my Uncle and when I when I think of him the first thing I think of is his smiling eyes. He had this way of always making me feel special and loved. I had so many great conversations with him. He was so incredibly intelligent and man could he debate with you! He really loved his family and I always looked at my Aunt Sylvia and his relationship as something very special and admired that so much. My heart will always have a special place for him and the way he loved so much. I'll always see his face smiling with his shining eyes and feel his love for the world. You will be so missed Uncle Dick. Sending so much love and prayers to my Aunt Sylvia and Cousins Ellen, Pam and Jay.

Every time I look at this picture I cry. I just want one more hug from my dad. One more look. One more time to hear his voice. He was an incredible man and overcame so much. He was brilliant, talented and passionate. He was sensitive to beauty and nature and music. He loved my mom with his entire being. He never stopped learning whether it was airplanes, model trains, furniture, gardening, soup making.... The list goes on and on. I feel like the world should stop spinning for a moment. Love you dad.

Sylvia
Please accept our sympathy in the passing of Dick. We will always have fond memories of the friendship we had years ago. I remember the time Dick built the bar in our kitchen so I could have a dishwasher. He was so very talented.
We have been in North Carolina for 18 years now and currently we are in Charlotte to avoid the hurricane Florence. It is total destroying our town of Jacksonville (on the coast). So far our house is surviving but the rain in to much to handle. It will be some time before we will be able to return home. Prayers for you and your family.
