OLEAN - Anita D (Watkins) Edmonson was born Sept. 16, 1940 in Lafayette, Ind. and, after short but fierce battle with cancer, died Thursday (Sept. 13, 2018) at the Cuba Memorial Hospital.

She lived life by her own terms and in her final days reminded her family to "not just live life, but create it".

In 1959 she was crowned Miss Indiana and went on to be contestant in the Miss USA and Miss Universe pageants held in Long Beach, Calif.

An animal lover, she doted on her cat and her bird, Blue.

She is survived by her longtime friend, Richard Thomas; her sister, Pequita (Watkins) Behrndt (John Behrndt); sister-in-law, JoAnn Watkins; six nieces and nephews, Deborah Bartnick, Jon Behrndt, Melinda Janosky, Todd Watkins, Leslie Ball and Cari Watkins-Bates; and 13 grandnieces and grandnephews.

She is predeceased by her parents, Donald C Watkins in 2010 and Doris P (Holloway) Watkins in 2007; brother, Donald D Watkins in 2000; an infant sister, Constance Watkins in 1937; and a grandnephew, Gunnar Alexander Bartnick in 1997.

At her request, there will be no funeral visitation. Her final resting place will be near the Holloway's family farm at Yeoman Cemetery, Ind.
