ALLEGANY - Kevin L. Curran, 67, of 18 Pine St., passed away Thursday (Feb. 18, 2021) at Olean General Hospital, with his two daughters by his side.

Born Jan. 10, 1954, in Cuba, he was the son of Donald and Esther Wingert Curran. In May 1975, he married his high school sweetheart, Judith A. "Judy" Curran, who predeceased him Nov. 23, 2014.

Kevin was a 1972 graduate of Allegany High School and attended Lockhaven State College, graduating in 1976 with a bachelor of science degree in physical education. He received his master of education in administration in 1999, from St. Bonaventure University.

In 1980, he began what became a continuous career with Portville Central School, first as a teacher and coach, and later as an athletic director and principal.

Kevin was one of the most winning coaches at PCS. He was an assistant football coach his first year at Portville, before taking the head football coaching position in 1981, a position he held until 1991.

He was also the girl's varsity basketball coach from 1980 to 1983, and the boy's varsity track coach, from 1984 to 1987. He served as athletic director for 11 years, and also served as the Cattaraugus County track chairman; the Section 6 Divisional football chairman; and helped in the creation of the Expressway Conference.

From 2004 until his retirement in 2010, he was the school's principal. In 2015, Kevin was inducted into the Portville Central School Hall of Fame. Even after retirement, he was always the champion of all students and faculty, in his unrelenting devotion to the Portville Central School community.

In his retirement, Kevin enjoyed traveling, volunteering, cooking and spending time with family.

Surviving are two daughters, Kaitlin (John) Speta of Waterford and Kristin (Lucas) Flachs of Stamford; a granddaughter, Lydia Flachs; two grandsons, Wyatt Flachs and Jack Speta; a loving companion, Nancy Crawford of Allegany; two brothers, Joseph (Ellen) Curran of Pompano Beach, Fla. and Steven (Kathy) Curran of Gastonia, N.C.; a sister-in-law, Jan Howard of Allegany; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife; his parents; and a brother-in-law, Fred Howard.

I’ll always treasure Kevin as a good friend and one of the original group of guys in SmithHall at Lock Haven. We shared some wild and fun times together. He was always so upbeat and just fun to be around. His career accomplishments after college speak volumes to his character and the kind of loyal and caring person he was. Thankfully we all had the chance to meet again during the summer of 2019 and reminisce about the fun days at Lock Haven.
My sympathies go out to Nancy and his daughters Kaitlin and Kristin. I trust Kevin is now at peace and looking down on everyone with that big smile.

Kevin was always gracious and respectful in his interactions with those of us who worked with him to serve the youth of our region. As administrators during the same timeframe, he at Portville and me at Allegany-Limestone, we communicated frequently and I know he will be missed by many. My thoughts and condolences go out to family members and loved ones.
